About
Hidden Oak Winery has received many awards including: 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Silver Medal - 07' Encanto Silver Medal - 07' Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Double Gold - 07' Petit Sirah 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Double Gold - 06' Encanto Gold - 06' Cabernet Sauvignon Gold - 06' Merlot. Hidden Oak Winery is owned and operated by the James family. Mike James is the grape grower and winemaker. He has one goal. That is to produce the finest bottle of wine for his customers. A great wine starts with the best grapes possible and this is where Mike has the advantage. His vineyard is located in the El Pomar area of Templeton, CA which boasts the finest soil for growing grapes. With his careful management of the vineyard and the optimum harvesting time, the grapes reach perfection. The wines produced at Hidden Oak Winery are only bottled after all the fruit flavors, tannins and character are in balance and have reached their peak of maturity, consequently the making of a great bottle of wine is assured. Hidden Oak winery is in the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA).

I love off the beaten path, boutique wineries and this one has quickly become a favorite. Mike James, grows the grapes, makes, bottles and ships the wine himself. Stop in for a tasting and you will be treated to some really interesting stories from Jim's past and present. If you have fallen out of favor with merlot, you will fall back in love with it here. Treat yourself to a hour of lovely wines, conversation and some of the best views you will ever see anywhere.

Checked out Hidden Oak over Zinfest weekend. Great choice! Mike was there when we visited and first thing we were offered was several barrel tastings of upcoming releases. Incredibly good wine already. Mike was friendly and spent time answering our questions. Went back inside and tried a variety of reds. All were tasty! If you like fruit forward wines which show off the grape instead of a ton of oak and tannins check this place out. The Tasting room is small and only open Friday thru Sunday. Still go!. Another great feature is Mike will put wine in a cardboard container for shipping home. 4 liters in one box. He will box any wine he has available, just give him some time. Look forward to our next visit. OH and tastings are free

If you love wine, and scenery, then Hidden Oak is tour place. The wines are made with great care and NOT in huge abundances. Special blends, Encanto, are excellent and gold medalists. Also extremely notable are the Zin, Merlot and Cabirenet..Give it a ton and you won't be sorry.

This family owned winery delivers top notch wines away from all the hoopla of the bigger wineries. This is a must stop for those wine lovers looking for great wine in a no frills imitate tasting room with one of the best views on the east side. It's not on the "wine map" but Google knows how to get you there.

Our trio took a drive into Templeton and visited with Mike at Hidden Oak. It is always such a pleasure and treat for us to meet the winemakers and talk with them about their wines. Mike was so friendly and down to earth. We had a great tasting with him. If you are a lover of reds as we are, you MUST visit Mike at Hidden Oak. His Malbec is heaven in a glass. His Encanto is enchanting. He has to Zins one less peppery than the other. We got them all !!! We came away being members of his club. Please, take the time to go visit Mike. We can't wait to see him again.

I am a very spoiled wine consumer. I don't care about the scenery or ambiance, which many of the local wineries have- dare I say prettier than Napa.
Mostly I am interested in is the quality of the wine ( 90 pts or better by most standards, including mine). Hidden Oak has its share of medals. This winery has a competitive advantage over many as the primary grapes are owned and farmed by the owner.
In a comparative tasting of his wine in bottle versus the box, I preferred the box. There is also a price advantage. Compared to the 90-125 other wines I purchase per year-this was my best value. In fact I would rate the '06 Merlot (now gone) at 94-95 pts after a minimum 15 minutes in your glass- watch it evolve.
Taste for yourself, but wait for the merlot to come around.

We happened upon this Winery several years ago and loved their Red on Red. We became wine club members and try to stop by whenever we are traveling through the Paso area. Recently we had a large group and called Mike to see if we could swing by. He accommodated our group, took us on a tour of the barrel room, fed us lots of wine, and kept the kids entertained too! This is how a winery should be- good wine, friendly owners, and welcoming atmosphere. Love this place!

The tasting room leaves a lot to be desired visually. I believe they spend more effort on the wine then the tasting room and outside areas. I really enjoyed the wine and the view of the rolling hills and vineyard is breath taking. Free tastings and great wine. Was able to relax and take our time. This is the farthest winery in the area but worth the drive.
