About
Truckee River Raft Company is the original Lake Tahoe Rafting company. We are located on River Road/Highway 89 in the heart of Tahoe City, California. Our raft excursions consist of a leisurely, self-guided, five-mile float down the Truckee River. Our voyage is perfect for family and friends ages 2 and up. You’ll cruise through mellow and serene areas with picturesque mountain views and lively little rapids, punctuated here and there with perfect swimming holes and picnic spots. We happily welcome dogs and encourage you to bring lunch and drinks (but remember, NO Styrofoam or glass) or just enjoy the view! The adventure usually takes 2 to 3 hours to complete and we are the ONLY rafting concession that exits directly onto the River Ranch Patio.

We designed a staycation in/around our house Truckee for our pod and wanted to include a fun float down the Truckee River. This year we wanted to stay safe together with our small pod though. The answer was to rent our own raft to float down the river. This company posts their sanitation and COVID safety procedures on their website so that you know what to expect ahead of time. If felt pretty comfortable with what I read so I reserved our raft. I definitely wanted mid week to avoid lots of other rafts on the river. This was the right way to go since we saw the river on Friday and Saturday and it was very crowded and beyond my comfort zone. We arrived and there was a line for check in. It seems that most people don't do all the paperwork ahead of time even though it is clear on the website. The spacing was well marked for check in but once you were waiting for the bus everyone was just milling around under the tent so we kept stepping further away. When the bus arrived the driver reminded everyone that masks are required. It was unclear if the bus was sanitized in between passengers but the driver had a spray bottle in his hand. We were most nervous about the 15 minute bus ride. We were sure the website said that only every other row of seats would be filled on the bus. That was not the case. No rows were marked off and the bus was full. We just opened the window wide since the ride was so short. Getting the safety lecture and into our raft was easy. We wore our masks until it was picture time on the river. We re-sanitized the paddles and our hands and settled in for an easy float on a beautiful day. There wasn't a problem staying away from other rafts for the most part. At the end of the course you have to exit through a really busy outdoor restaurant. We knew this ahead of time so we put on our masks immediately upon disembarking and kept them on until we go to our car which is almost directly across the street. Overall we felt good about doing this outing this safely. The company was excellent in posting that if any time you did not feel safe they would refund your money. There was only one older couple who did not want to go on the bus at all. They were able to arrange to be driven by a friend to the start instead. We love rafting the Truckee and were glad we could do again this year. That was 2 weeks ago and we are all fine and well.

This is a nice, relaxing rafting trip for families and group outings. It’s definitely not challenging, and it is appropriate for all age groups. We’ve done this trip before with kids as young as 5, and with seniors, and all had a good time. The water is very calm for the most part, and it only gets challenging in the last 2 minutes of the journey. I think the trip would take up to 3 hours, but if you’re actively paddling, you can do it in two hours. After you finish, they will bud you back to your car.

Bring water shoes if you have them so you can get out and walk around in the creek in some of the beautiful shallow spots along the way. But it’s not necessary. We brought flip flops which were fine. If you have a waterproof phone protector, that might be a good idea too. All of the other rafting parties we encountered were very laid back, pleasant, and didn’t start splash fights, which was nice. Also, along the way, there was some live music playing from the shores like a mini concert.

They have a nice little shot that sells items like sunscreen, hats, and tee shirts. I would recommend bringing your own hats and sunscreen in advance to save some money and protect yourself from the sun.

The staff was very helpful and pleasant. We were very pleased with the service, from check in, launch, and the trip back.

I’d recommend calling in advance for reservations to make sure you don’t have to wait too long. Also, it would be good to confirm that they are in fact running that day, as in years past, we’ve seen the Truckee rafting shut down due to low flows.

If you’re looking for challenging white water rafting, this is not for you. Try the American River rafting outside Sacramento if that’s what you’re looking for (also a great time, but not for the feint of heart). But this is a great way to spend a relaxing day in the Tahoe area!

River rafting was a fun way to spend time outside and enjoy a few moments of adventure after months spent at home. We saw a family of 8 ducklings and enjoyed finding a spot to get out and wade.

I was reassured by the precautions in place for COVID-19. All staff and guests wore masks at check-in, the boat launch and at pickup. The windows were open for the bus ride back, and we were able to maintain social distancing within the bus.

Thank you Truckee River Rafting for making the trip possible - we will be back!

Fun rafting trip! Well organized, check in and launch required wearing a mask, all the employees wore masks, check in desks were setup outside. Everything worked like clockwork from pulling in and being directed to a parking spot, being checked-in and getting our raft and instructions. No waiting around. Everything was very clean. Best part is that they allow dogs so we could bring our pup along for the ride.
Despite there being a lot of people the rafts were spaced out and we enjoyed the river mostly by ourselves. Only negative thing was that busy Rte 89 runs along the river, although not visible most of the time we did have the traffic noise.
The trip was advertised as 2 - 3 hours, we arrived at the take-out in 2 hours. Next time I would paddle less and stop more often along the way. At the take out everything was well organized again and we were off the raft and in a very clean Shuttle bus heading back, no waiting around for the shuttle back.
Everybody was very friendly, helpful and competent despite the handicap of wearing masks and trying to keep the 6’ distance.
Highly recommend Truckee River Raft Company, would raft with them again anytime!

So glad we chose Truckee River Raft Co. -( the orange boats, orange paddles) They went the extra mile to be sure we were COVID19 safe from walking up to check in, parking, then on the bus (masks are required and must have every other row open and same with the launching of your raft) One person forgot to put their mask on before boarding the bus and the driver politely reminded them to please put it on. If you are concerned at all to be trying this during COVID times, rest assured these folks have it down. At the end there are some small rapids that you have to watch out for, but thankfully, the orange boats of Truckee River Raft Co. can go straight to the off load dock and disembark easily, whereas we saw the blue boats have to quickly navigate the rapids to make a sharp right and we saw a couple folks moored up on the embankment of rocks trying to get there. We brought our dog and he loved it too! Ducks happily swim up to you to see if you have any snacks. We also recommend going early to avoid the crowds and less heat - the water is nice and cool even in the early morning but not too cool you can't swim. There are many shallow spots to park your raft for awhile to take a swim or picnic.Recommend water shoes - while the water is shallow, the large rocks can be slippery. Your stuff in the raft may get wet if you bump into rocks so recommend bring as little as possible otherwise, or bring stuff you don't mind getting wet. We brought a waterproof case for our cell phones and so glad we did!

We had a blast on the Truckee River. Smooth enough to take my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter, and she loved it! Takes about 3 hours. Water felt great, and nice warm sun. Go in the morning as the thunderclouds tend to roll in during the afternoon. Lots of sandbars to stop and play, and bathrooms along the way. Friendly staff, easy to book and the buses come frequently to pick you up at the end. Great patio dining at the end of the raft ride. LOVED it!

In spite of Covid-19 realities we were pleased to see TRR take all precautions to keep us and others safe from signing in and being transported by bus to the launch site. Employees are hustling and courteous. The earlier the launch the better the trip down the Truckee in our eyes. We signed up for the 8:30am launch and because the river gets loaded with others by late morning it was a wise decision. Do take snacks and drinks. You can pull over to take a break in some parts of the river and it makes it all the more enjoyable. Haul outs were nicely handled at the end. The young crew obviously is well trained in customer care.

We’ve used this company a few times to raft the Truckee and it’s a solid experience. Great team, consistent process, great overall outing. Would recommend bringing a dry bag for phones, keys, and anything else you want to keep dry. If you have young kids, I would recommend water guns. Can bring soft coolers...nice to bring drinks and snacks. Don’t forget a water proof speaker, sunscreen and hats (sun protection)! Total rafting time is about 3 hours (depends on how many times you stop along the way). Would highly recommend!

I’ve Done this trip many times over the years. Just did it on the 4th of July. Yes you can float this river in your own rafts, but the ease, efficiency, and quality of raft make using this raft company a no brainer. They are flexible, hard working, careful, and easy. Photos they take are usually worth it, so smile and go for it. Plus whenever you see popped rafts or inner tubers that are freezing by the time they are done, I’m glad for the big rafts. You can go as slow or fast as you want. But average is 2-3 hrs, depending on if you paddle and how many stops you make. And getting out at river ranch at the end for beer and nachos is a great win. The company has exclusive rights to the docks, so it’s not as easy to get out or park there if you don’t use them. Quick bus shuttle takes you back to your car.

This was my favorite adventure on our recent trip to Tahoe! They did a GREAT job of making us feel safe and socially distant at all times. The whole experience was easy and we loved stopping at a swimming hole and jumping in the beautiful water. The best part was the kids (and maybe the adults too) screaming as we bounced along the "rapids" We will definitely be back!
