We heard you could do a cheese tasting here, but it's not really a 'tasting experience' - you can just taste the cheese, and any of them, before you buy it. It's good cheese, don't get me wrong, but I was expecting the assistant to provide us with a range of cheeses in a certain order - it was me who was ill informed, rather than them offering something that didn't live up to expectations. Perhaps this is an idea they can develop for the future - provide 5 or so cheeses for people to taste for a small fee, that is waived if you buy a block of cheese?!

We stopped here as part of our segway tour but you can just stop into the shop and they'll provide you with samples of their amazing choices. Their Toma is very good, but I purchased their Oro Secco, a lovely aged option, as well as one of their milder habanero cheeses. If you like cheese, don't miss this lovely little place in Sonoma!

Nice selection, old-time historical cheese factory. Most certainly not a tourist trap. Good selection of white/golden cheeses. Very very fresh.

All the cheese selections are good and made with quality ingredients, but the Toma is by far, the most outstanding. We discovered this gem at a wine/cheese pairing class. Served at room temperature, there is no need for a cracker, bread slice, etc. Allow the Toma to melt in your mouth and enjoy the flavor and texture. You may not want to share in the future! We drive 60 miles JUST FOR THE TOMA! Good excuse for lunch out, too.

Vella is located in a historic building with a great history. But it's just an average place where as soon as you walk in the tiny space, you are at the counter. There's a floor cooler with their cheese selections. You can taste several kinds from the staff behind the counter. But it's not a destination, you will not see any cheese being made and it's not anything special. Do they make good cheese? Yes, absolutely. And it's important that they use only natural ingredients, do not use animal rennet, & buy their milk from a local sustainably farmed Sonoma family dairy. They produce good standard cheeses (jack & cheddar versions for the most part). I gave it a 4 rating because for standard-type cheeses, they do a great job and you can't compare them to more "exotic" forms of cheese made by such companies as Cowgirl Creamy (Mt. Tam cheese) and Cypress Grove (Humboldt Fog), etc.
