This happened on June 14, 1846. It is historical.

A group of 30 Americans, following the leader William Ide and Ezekiel Merritt entered the Mexican outpost of Sonoma. They took their Bear flag and replaced the Mexican flag with the Bear flag.

The monument in the park is huge. There are several plaques. There is a relief on the monument.

At the very top of the monument, there is a man with the Bear flag in his hand.

They felt victorious!

This is worthwhile to see!

Make sure to seek this monument out if you are wandering around Sonoma Plaza. It is a testament to the early days of the Bear Republic, a significant chapter in early California history. Nicely maintained and well done.

Very historical site although the actual raising of the flag when Gen Vallejo was taken prisoner was a little farther northeast of this spot. There is an old black and white photo taken from the hills north of town showing THAT particular rock/boulder sitting alongside the road before it was moved to the plaza.

This monument is located in the Sonoma Square park and provides a nice commemoration of the Bear Flag Revolt, which ultimately led to the founding of the State of California.
