This winery is in the Fairplay AVA, in the heart of Eldorado County. I went there last month for the Wine & Jazz event. The place has such a cool vibe. They have a brand new tasting room. Sam, the winemaker and GM, was super friendly and makes such incredible wines. They have a charcuterie and cheese platter to pair with the wine. It is a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy excellent wines with friends (or a date). They are only open Friday-Sunday. Highly recommended.

El Dorado county is so beautiful, and the wine country is up and coming. Most of the wineries provide big California reds. By accident (via the Priority Wine Pass), we found Somerset and its amazing wineries. Shadow Ranch stood out because the wine maker shapes his wines in French styles. The GSM blend is outstanding. The tasting room is subtle, relaxed and in a building from the 1800's. Kara, our tasting room host, was friendly and extremely knowledgeable. A hidden gem in the Sierra Foothills.

Never had a server give us a wine sample and go out and pick the grape to sample. The sauvignon blanc estate was excellent. Our server had an excellent presentation and the wines were very good. We sat outside and enjoyed our wines and the beautiful day. Very good choice.

We bought the inexpensive red blend (Sheriff) because we thought it was a value. The hostess was informative and patient making our tasting experience pleasant and lingering. If you are this far north, stop by and see what you like.

Great wines, lovely venue, and lots of nice extras like the pairing days and music. This is on our regular rotation when we come up wine tasting.

Had a great time at Shadow Ranch tasting. The Mitch is quite the showman. You’ll have a great visit and the wines are exceptional this year. Rejoined the wine club.
Thanks.

We discovered this winery on our way to Amador last year; there are a few nice places to stop in Somerset. The wines at Shadow Ranch surprised us they were so good. On our way to Amador again this weekend and looking forward to stopping here on the way.

We enjoyed an afternoon stop at Shadow Ranch. They do charge a $5 tasting fee for 6 tastings. We were not asked to pay up front. We made a purchase and we were not charged for the tasting. The staff was very friendly. I would recommend taking a picnic lunch and eating there while enjoying your wine - the view was amazing. Having been born and raised in Napa, we found that the wineries in the Fair Play area to be friendlier, quiter, and more spectacular views. We plan on making a return trip in June.

This very small tasting room has a nice view. The wines were good, bought a couple of bottles. Our negative is they charge $5 tasting fee up front, she made it very clear we pay NOW. Did not refund the $5 after we made a purchase. $5 is a small fee but this is Somerset, not Napa. Really, you are going to charge me to taste your wines, I purchase your wines and you keep the money? We won't return.

What great place. They went above and beyond to make my wife's birthday surprise a smashing success. The wines they have here are among the best we've had, especially the 'Sheriff'.
Thanks Shadow Ranch!
