Neighborhood: Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.

The New Santa Monica Place opened up recently and a friend and I had the chance to visit just last week (September 22, 2010). This indoor/outdoor mall is very modern and functional. The reason I say functional is because there is a lot of seating available on all three levels. It's the kind of place you could meet a friend to catch up on news and then shop and grab a bite to eat. I wish we had a place like this here at home, but the openness of it would not work well with our snowy winters.
The dining deck has a view of the beach and places to eat indoors and out. The outside dining area has large heaters to take the chill out of the air on cooler nights. The restrooms were large and clean.
We shopped at a few of the stores, but since our goal was to check out the surrounding area, we didn't spend too much time there. If you are shopping in the Santa Monica area, make a stop at Santa Monica Place.
They even have their own page on Facebook if you want to know what's going on there.

My partner and I have been to Santa Monica several times, and love it.
To us, Santa Monica Place is a magic place, full of a rich variety of street stalls, food outlets, department stores, and unexpected variety.
We love gadgets (sad, I know), and spent a great time looking over the gadgets at the Brookstone store. We had to limit ourselves to three items, or we would have had trouble getting home to Britain.
If you're in Santa Monica, dive into Santa Monica Place and sample the magic - you'll want to return, again and again...

So fun, vibrant and something for everyone. Great pedestrian area any time of day. Night time offers sidewalk entertainment. A lovely oasis to enjoy.

Decent high end mall with some nice food options also such as Cheesecake Factory, however the selection of shops is not the wide unless you want to go to department stores such as Nordstrom.

This mall use to be real cool, although a majority of the shops are still there, a lot have left as well. Half of the dining terrace on the third floor is abandoned with many of the restaurants gone, but there are still some nice choices available like Sonoma and The Cheesecake Factory. My best advice would be to skip this mall and check out Third Street instead. Take it from a local.

On the top level there is a good court with a variety of food options and a playground for the kids! Great place to eat on a budget and wear the kids out too!

Another place to visit while in Santa Monica. This is a kind of "open" shopping mall, small to medium size. Nothing in particular to detail, but the top floor is a very nice food court, especially if you go at sunset. No more to add.

All the shops stretching right down the third street promenade you would want but so much more relaxed than a mall and getting fresh air and friendly enthusiastic service made the shopping experience that much nicer

It is anchored by Nordstrom and also has a Bloomingdales (although quite a small one) and a number of other high end/moderate stores (Diane Von Furstenberg, BDBG, Camper, Hugo Boss, Kitson) and quite a number of other notables (Kate Spade, Ted Baker, Coach etc). I loved the open air aspect of it - fits very well with the Santa Monica vibe. The Blue Stove restaurant on the top floor of Nordstrom does really high quality tapas, if you are looking for something good quality to eat in the area. There is also a Cheesecake Factory coming soon to the upper level, which some locals seem excited about.

There’s heaps of places to eat plus Santa Monica place has a food court on the roof near the Cheesecake Factory with several cheap, yummy places to chose from.
We found the area safe although a lot of homeless and we weren’t out at night.

How do I get there on public transportation from Sherman Oaks? Are there senior rates on buses? Day passes? I am traveling with my granddaughters 10 and 11. I will be 80 in August.
How do I get between the pier, Third St promenade and the beach.
