We did an overnighter on a Saturday; our hotel was less than two blocks from the beach. We walked the beach first thing in the morning and took a stroll to get some coffee. In the evening we watched the sun go down. It was very peaceful; the beach was clean. All ages of people walking on the beach. We even saw a dolphin; everyone at the shore were so excited.

Sandy Beaches, a Lighthouse and an amazing view close to the Santa Cruz broad walk - a perfect place for a quick getaway on a Sunny Day (~an hour away from SFO). Beach Volleyball courts are a great add on!

The beach is surrounded by a few restaurants and there a few paid parking lost close by.

This is the small stretch of beach east of the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor. From here you have a good view of the Walton Lighthouse located on the west side of the harbor. It is pleasant to visit but it is no big loss if you miss it.

During the summer months you will need a parking pass to be at this state beach (which you may obtain from the trailer on e.cliff dr. and 11th ave). In the winter time it is first come, first serve parking. Same thing with the fire barrels where one can have a cozy flame on the beach as you take time to peer into the ocean.
I've seen pods of dolphins & whales, schools of fish, flocks of sea birds and families of sea otters gathering at the foot of the beach here.
What's more, dogs may be walked on leash (or off-leash super early in the morning).

Plenty of space for flying a kite, swimming.
Every so often the beach does break for surfers but, often, this is only when the swell is erupting to 20 ft. plus in the popular breaks.

We found this beach accidentally and since it was later in the day we were able to snag a parking spot. We didn't swim but enjoyed walking along the surf. It was almost deserted, so I'm guessing it's not something most tourists know about! I wished we had known earlier in our stay because we would have made a day of it here.

This is south of the beaches that the weekend tourist know and haunt. Here local families can enjoy the beach contending only with fellow locals.

This is a pleasant stretch of beach adjacent to East Cliff, big enough to accommodate lots of visitors on a sunny day. There appears to be a fair amount of surf for surfers, plus stretches where swimmers can safely swim between buoys. It's pretty clean, and there are lifeguards on duty for people taking to the ocean.

Twin Lakes is a smaller beach area, adjacent to the Santa Cruz Harbor. Currently, they are building a boardwalk and trying to improve parking. Not sure when it will re-open.
