A friend and I booked a foil surfing lesson with Covewater. We started off with a miscommunication that resulted in a late start. We thought we had confirmed our lesson by discussing the plan over the phone the day before, but we missed the confirmation text. We were disappointed and a little frustrated until we clarified things over the phone with Olivier.

As soon as we met in person the experience continued to improve, exceeding initial expectations! Olivier apologized for the miscommunication and immediately set about making sure we had a great experience. He went out of his way to make sure we had a great time (not only during the lesson but afterward in the Santa Cruz area). We did not have any experience foil surfing before (although surfing experience and good balance is clearly required). Olivier was a very patient and enthusiastic instructor. I think he might have been even more stoked than us when we were progressing! He took pictures and video and shared them with us afterward.

Once we finished for the day he got us set up with SUP boards that matched our skill level and size. He gave us some recommendations for breaks and touring spots. He even gave us some suggestions for other things to do around Santa Cruz. Definitely a big part of trip to Santa Cruz.

The guy who helped my mom and me yesterday was SUPer helpful! (hehe) He set us up with good boards for our size, gave us a few pointers since it was our first time, gave us a map and told us exactly where to go, and loaded the boards on top of my car. $30 to rent for the day, we ended up going later in the afternoon and only spent an hour on the water. Check them out earlier in the morning before the wind picks up, I think this is a great value and about a mile from the beach/marina.

I've rented SUP's in four countries over the past 6 years. This shop had a better selection of quality boards and excellent service and accommodated our schedule. I would highly recommend these people.

I wanted an easy way to try SUP with my two daughters - 10 and 12. Covewater was great - I emailed somewhat last minute and they were able to accommodate us - even emailing responses to my questions on the weekend. Mike the instructor was good with kids - patient when they got frustrated or tired. He gave as much instruction as you were looking for and let us enjoy the beautiful surroundings without feeling like there was a forced agenda. He clearly knew what he was doing and we felt completely safe. Overall a great intro - we saw sea lions! blue and orange jellies! amazing birds! and Covewater made it so easy.

A few things to know - the lessons take off from local beaches (in this case Capitola) - so unless there is a public bathroom nearby - which in this case I didn't see one - plan accordingly. You can lock stuff up in the instructor's truck which is handy when you want your towels, change of clothes etc without treking back to the car. I wouldn't leave stuff on the beach while you are out paddling - relatively safe but petty theft happens.

Parking can be tough in Capitola. We had a relatively early lesson @10 so there were still parking places at the top of the stairs above the beach on Cliff Drive (paid with credit card - 4 hr max I think). You can then walk down the stairs to the beach by the wharf where you will meet the instructor. It's closer than it looks and easier than trying to park at a meter in town.

Super knowledgeable and helpful employees with a huge choice of SUPs; universals, touring, surfing, racing, and even downwinders. Awesome selection!
$30 all day rental including the pads and straps to put it on the car? That's a deal.
They get my business!

I was very impressed by easy email contact helping us to try and arrange our session while we were already travelling. In the end we popped in to the store and they did everything they could to accommodate us within out time frame!
We did the private beginners lesson and our instructor (Olivier) was really welcoming and good fun. He was able to explain things clearly and was really encouraging without being pushy at all.
As total beginners it was great to have such experienced people who seemed to genuinely enjoy taking out beginners. If you want support to help you get started I'd totally recommend the investment of a couple of hours with these guys.
The location (New Brighton Beach) was perfect and it made for a really enjoyable experience.

Had a great time learning to hydrofoil with Olivier. He gives great instruction in real time while you fly as well as good insight before your first flight. Olivier offers a much safer and faster learning curve than you could ever get on your own. I've had 2 lessons so far and I'm looking forward to a couple more to get comfortable harnessing wave power.

Covewater Paddle Surf is the place for expert SUP advice and incredible selection of SUP gear. We found the latest in leashes and foil surfing, and even bumped into a pro! Hit up Olivier and Damien for local tips - they’ll set you up like they did for us.

I rented a SUP yesterday from Covewater Paddle Surf. in Santa Cruz where I first learned to surf at the Hook. I have been surfing since 1967 and SUP since 2004. I like to paddle along the coastline of my home in N San Diego and catch waves along the way up to head high.
Paddlebosrds are big objects. Airtravel with one is virtually impossible except with the inflatables that leave much to be desired performance-wise. I took such a board to French Polynesia and it was ok for lagoon cruising but not serious paddling or surfing. The alternative if you dont have a “borrow” connection with a local where you travel , is to rent.

Things have improved in the last ten years since I first tried to find a board to rent in Europe. Even so, most boards available for rent are heavy big cruisers which is understandable considering the market. But WOW! what a super find on my trip this week to NCal. Covewater Paddle has it all and a program that is reasonably priced and gives you everything you need to drive away with a board on your car (even a rental sedan) and go paddling!!! I wish there was such a fine shop everywhere for travelling paddlers. Olivier assessed my ability level with thoughtful questions, listened to what I wanted out of my session and set me up with the perfect light board I could sctually carry down to the water. He accurately assessed the blade size and shaft length of the paddle, changed out the fin on a surfing paddle board to make it track better upwind (I had told him I wanted to paddle up the coast New Brighton to Pleasure Pt) ) and I had a great day!!! The paperwork process and waiver was easy. I saw a Covewater Paddle tour group of beginner paddlers being guided by one of the other shop professionals. They looked like they were having fun. It has been my experience that it is a rare sport shop that can cater to the needs of both beginners and advanced participants well. Covewater Paddle appears to understand the key is LISTENING and personal attention. I highly recommend them and wish them the best of success.
