About
We are an ASA certified sailing school and sailboat charter company that offers all levels of sailing instruction, skippered & bareboat charters, and Corporate Team Building regattas. We have been located on the Central California Coast, in the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor since 1979. The Monterey Bay is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine sanctuary; a Federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. The steady and consistent winds, the special quality of open ocean sailing, the abundance and variety of sealife, and the diversions offered by the cities of Santa Cruz and Monterey make the Monterey Bay one of the most challenging and enjoyable locations on the West Coast. Frequent sightings of grey whales, seals, sea lions, dolphins, otters and pelicans are just a part of your sailing adventure with Pacific Yachting and Sailing.

We chartered Zazen, the Beneteau 461 for a week tour of Monterey Bay. Starting from Santa Cruz we sailed to Moss Landing and stayed at the Elkhorn Yacht Club two nights, enjoying kayaking in Elkhorn Slough. We then sailed out and around Point Pinos to spend a glorious night moored in Stillwater Cove which faces Pebble Beach, then three nights at Breakwater Cove in Monterey. The boat was comfortable, reliable and able to handle the swells and waves in the bay. It also makes a great platform to stop and watch the abundant marine life, including many humpback whales and a blue whale.Breanna in the office is very professional, and Andy was available by phone and text any time we had questions about operating the boat.

My wife signed me up for a basic sailing class and I was amazed from the first minute. Dylan , our instructor had traveled the world on a sailboat as a child with his parents. He was super calm and collected in the boat and answered all questions the participants had. I also spoke to some other people taking other more advanced classes and they all had only great things to say. I can highly recommend pacific sail and all their classes. I’ll be coming back for sure!

I recently took the ASA 101 course from Pacific Sail, and it was excellent. Breanna, in the office was very organized and did a wonderful job communicating updates re: weather, covid precautions, etc. Two days of sailing and instruction were done on a very clean, well kept vessel with an excellent instructor, Brian. I really left the class feeling like my misc sailing experiences were solidified into proper crew training with substance and staying power.

Our sailing experience was pleasant. We were hoping for more of a thrilling sailing experience, but unfortunately there wasn’t any wind in Santa Cruz bay that day, so most of the sail was on motor. However, with low swells, it made for a smooth ride and we enjoyed the experience. We will certainly be back for another ride later.

The only nit I may have is responsiveness. I’d suggest they share the name of the captain and their mobile number on the reservation confirmation email. 2 of the 6 in our group fell sick with Covid on the morning of the sail, and I called on the phone to check if we could reschedule our sail to another day to be safe, but it was the day before thanksgiving and there was no one returning back our calls. With no way to reschedule or cancel, we had to test, and 4 of us that tested negative had to rush to make the start time.

I've gone on many sails with Pacific Sail and they have all been professionally handled, with great captains and premier sailboats. On our bucket list was to learn to sail. This introductory 2-day class was so informative and exciting we have already signed up for a 5-day ASA certification class and plan to continue. Our instructor Brian was fun, a great teacher and may have taught us more than I think was included in the syllabus (ssshh). Thanks Brian! See you again soon!

I signed up for a review session/private lesson in July and, after driving half an hour, arrived to find the instructor locked out of the office and boat--the office admin having not shown up. This is symptomatic of the lack of organization of this operation I had experienced in signing up for the session. To top it off, instead of contacting me to apologize and offer something to make up for my lost time and disappointment, I had to make several efforts to contact these folks to get the charge for the session reversed. It is a shame that this operation has gone downhill from the prior year when I had a couple of enjoyable lessons.

I had a great time and learned a ton from Shannon of Pacific Sail. He was patient, funny, and professional while maintaining a classic Santa Cruz chill. He took advantage of times of light winds to educate and enhanced the experience by "following the winds" when an opportunity for fun presented itself; in our case by sailing towards a humpback whale and having lunch as we watched it surface. fun times.

I have been chartering boats from Pacific Sail for 6 plus years. My favorite boats have been Perspective and Zazen (which is not part of the fleet anymore). I was excited to hear that Aquavit was added to the fleet. Aquavit is a 42 foot dual help boat built by Jeanneau, a French boatyard in Les Herbiers. There were 5 adults and 2 children in the party.. We left the dock approximately 2 pm and sailed for 3 hours. It was a very enjoyable day sailing and watching dolphins and sea lions and pelicans. We even saw a Mola Mola fish sunning itself. Aquavit is a great sailing boat. Plan on chartering the boat many times this summer. Maya at the Pacific Sail desk was a great help and made sure we were safely on our way.

I was trained in this school to the level of ASA 104. I came as an absolute beginner. The School has excellent and very friendly staff and highly professional instructors. They taught me everything there is to know and be able to safely sail on a sailing vessel. Thank you!
The School has an excellent yacht fleet. ASA has very informative and well illustrated study guides for every level of study. I recommend Pacific Sail to anyone who wants to learn or improve their sailing skills. Igor

101 and 103 have been amazing! Myles has been an amazing instructor. I started these courses with no knowledge of sailing and he has spent so much time helping me and making sure I understand the basics so that I feel safe and comfortable. I can’t express what an amazing experience this has been! I 100% would recommend taking sailing courses at Pacific Sail. I feel beyond privileged to have this knowledge! Can’t wait to do 104 soon! :)
