Awesome - Amazing. If they are out there, Dave from VENTURE QUEST will find them. We paddled out of Moss Landing, CA. looking for Humpback Whales. From the mouth of the harbor the sea was a blank canvas, slightly agitated under high clouds. The Whale Watching boats were past the horizon. Those on their way out sped past us. It did not look good. Dave, our guide, continued positive and kept us informed and paddling. It was as though he had a 6th sense as to where they might be. Eventual we came across 4-5 circling and feeding around us, a mother, a calf, a teen and 1- 2 adults. They are wild. They are enormous. With Dave we felt perfectly safe. As an individual this is a ‘once in a lifetime experience’.

My wife and I are (Lake Superior) experienced kayakers...Dave was kind enough to let us go it alone in the ocean. But not without making sure we knew what to expect and where to go safely. He kept an eye on us from a distance which provided us with a sense of security. Had the thrill of a lifetime kayaking with sea lions and sea otters. Next time we’ll request Dave to take us on the Moss Landing whale watching tour for sure!

This was one of my top sight seeing adventures of my life. We kayaked among giant humpback whales breaching, surfacing, and tail-slapping. Hundreds of dolphins jumped around us as seals and sea otters played. I have never been to a place so alive. We left with an unforgettable day we are recommending to all of our friends.
Dave and crew outfitted us with great equipment and delivered us right to the action. Dave taught us how to control the kayak and kept us moving to follow the animals. My pictures and videos have received countless oo's and ah's. Do not hesitate to spend the morning on the water with Venture Quest Day Kayaking.

We had an amazing time - two adults and two teenagers. You must be reasonably fit as we started in Moss Landing and paddled out for about 2-1/2 or 3 hours. We felt very safe the entire time and the equipment was all in excellent shape. We saw close to a dozen humpback whales, and two of us (one kayak) got within 5 feet of a whale! He swam under our kayak.... Once in a lifetime experience. We highly recommend Venture Quest Day Kayaking (Santa Cruz kayak) if you want to have an authentic whale watching experience.

My daughter and I went on a whale watching paddle with Dave. The kayaks were sturdy and Dave spent time adjusting the interior peddles so that steering was easy for my daughter. We left Moss Cove and headed out into the ocean. Dave pointed out jelly fish, sea lions, otters and way out there whales. Dave was able to tell us where to keep looking for whales to come up after they'd gone deep. We saw several whales at a distance and then, as we were looking into the distance for them to resurface, a whale came up less than 20 feet in front of our boat. Dave yelled out directions on how to follow the whale as it continued to dive and surface. When it raised it's tail for a deep dive it was right in front of our boat (15 - 20 feet) and we had a beautiful view of the fluke. Something my daughter and I will never forget. My daughter is 32, but there was a family with an elementary school aged son and a middle school aged son along. They didn't go out as far as we did, but everyone had a great time. (The second guide, Bill, stayed back with that family and showed them the whales that were in closer to the harbor.)

By far the best tour in California; highly recommended.
We did the Elkhorn Slough / whale tour.
What an experience.
Whales ... hundreds ..
And one that jumped over my kayak..
Dave was kidding ... then it happened ...
We are experienced kayakers so may have gone a little further than normal ?
I do think experience is needed on this particular tour especially on a choppy day, the sea is not for wimps or those without respect for it.
The afternoon wind came up as we were heading back into the slough it did require effort to get through. Waves, waves, waves ... I'm still feeling the odd roll on terra firma...
Seals, whales up close, sea otters and birds galore.
kayak, jacket, skirt, paddle, dry sack all provided.
Priceless at a fair price ...

My kids and I (17, 23 and 25) had never kayaked, so I looked online and contacted Dave with Venture Quest. We left out of Moss Landing. He met us there (right on time), and did a great job explaining how to kayak and what we would be doing. He got us all set up and we went about 2 miles out into the ocean. We saw whales right away. At some points they were about 70 feet from us (we could smell them). The whales were breaching, rolling, it was amazing, and intimidating! It was a great trip. Just be ready to do a lot of paddling!

We went out for 2 hour tour at 10 am on August 3rd and the experience was fantastic. Guides Danny amd Burke were very friendly and knowledgeable and made several stops throughout the tour to help educate us on the various animals we were seeing. We saw sea otters, sea lions on the kelp forest. We were also very fortunate to see 2 humpback whales that ha come in close to marina for feeding. We stayed safe distance from all of the animals as some are protected species. All in all a great experience and well worth the money!

How should we dress for this tour in late March/early April, and is it appropriate for an 11 year old?

Hey,
I went on the Kayak trip in the fall and I imagine it would be similar to a March/April trip. It's generally pretty cool in the bay and cloudy. We were comfortable in shorts/swimsuits that can get wet and a t-shirt with a comfortable breathable top. You will be paddling on the open ocean which is substantial exercise and should keep you reasonably warm. I would also wear shoes that can get wet or sandals with straps (tevas).
I am not sure about an 11 year old. It comes down to paddling, which requires much effort that would be beyond the abilities of a child. If there is a strong paddler in the back of the kayak then you should be fine with a child. However, if you feel like you need two people paddling (it can get tiring on one person) then it might not be appropriate.
Hope that helps!
