After touring Hearst Castle our Caravan tour drove a few miles north to ESR.  There were at least 80 sunning themselves on the sand. A couple of beach masters were huge, watched one slowly drag himself out of the ocean onto the shore.  The 'Friends...More

Take the time and stop off the highway to view these guys doing their thing. Although not necessarily to much happening, it is great to view these animals in their habitat, mind you safely from the viewing platforms.

We've been there twice and each time this place didn't disappoint us. In springtime, the beach is packed with elephant seals, while in late summer fighting males can be seen. Each time it's an interesting experience.

Definitely worth the stop. They were so entertaining the day we were there. We had been to several different areas on the coast and seen elephant seals, but these seemed to be so much more active.

It all depends on the time of year and the day to how many Elephant seals and sea lions you will see sleeping on the sand. First time we went, we saw loads, this time about 20. Don't expect much but worth a stop of...More

Can’t miss out on this stop! It was so fun to watch these beasts! We could have stayed here awhile. It’s amazing how the herd has grown so much since 1992 I believe. Great stop!

Stopped by on our way down the coast. Mostly younger males in molt right now (supposedly a fraction of the hundreds during high season). The volunteers wander the boardwalk willing to share lots of information about the seals' life cycle and surprising facts (moms and...More

Stopped by after a boat tour of the GGB. Great the seals have an area of their own and watch them squabble for their space. Close by to other attractions on Fisherman’s Ward.

Not many there this time of the year, but the 30 or so we saw were awe inspiring. A volunteer gave us a great lesson on this beautiful sea mammal.

It is just over 200 miles between the two locations and that would take 4 hours driving or so depending on traffic. The Rookery is on the beach north of Cambria at San Simeon. Yosemite is East of highway 99 on highway 41... More
