If you enjoy being harassed by the homeless, this it the place to go in SLO. The entire town of San Luis Obispo has really been inundated with homeless, but the mission and it's surrounding lawns and benches seem to be the primary gathering point. This town used to be special. It used to be a town you could feel safe in at any time of the day or night. Now it's a mini-version of the Bay area and their same homeless issues.

We visited late afternoon and it was OK. Yes, there were a few homeless individuals, but they didn’t bother us. Went back after dinner and there were several individuals in sleeping bags scattered around. Also, the smell of urine was more pronounced.

This lovely large plaza by the mission connects the 1772 structure with the creek that runs through San Luis Obispo and the town's shopping/restaurant district. It is a great place from which to inspect the mission's architecture or to simply sit and relax or watch the passersby. I especially like the bear fountain that is a permanent part of the scene.
Lots of events get held here from a 14-week summer concert series on Friday nights to various fiestas. Last Sunday, we stopped by when an Autism and Awareness Fair was underway in the plaza. We had to edge our way through the crowd.
We saw no free parking nearby, but there were plenty of metered spaces. Payment is required seven days a week. Parking structures at Palm and Morro streets do not charge for the first 60 minutes.

The plaza is a wonderful open space in front of the mission. It would be excellent for any type of event, I'm sure it is put to good use, however we weren't there long enough to witness anything taking place there.

As a local, I love Mission Plaza. I've often taken my lunch here to sit, watch people, eat and take in the sunshine. The mission is gorgeous and the local fare around the mission is delish! There are more homeless individuals rambling through the grounds than I remember in the past, but overall, a nice place to sit, relax and go SLO.

This is a great site in downtown SLO for outside events, although it does get a bit warm in the Summer. It's surrounded by fun shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.

I am compassionate and have worked in social services for years, but, that said, the homeless denizens of Mission Plaza make this a not-so-friendly destination spot. There are much better choices along the Central Coast to spend a day.

To touch a piece of history older the United States is so incredible. The square in front of this mission is equally wonderful to experience.

A pleasant open space outside of the San Luis Obispo Mission, nice to sit down there if it's not too crowded. Central and close to the art museum, which is worth a visit.

Once the sun goes down a bit, it is very pleasant. There isn’t much seating so you need to bring your own.

It's right next to the mission. If you drove south on Monterey,Street, and ran the stoplight at Chorro, you'd be driving illegally on the Plaza. There's parking a block or so away in a structure north of the plaza. Lots of good places to eat on Higuera, just east of the plaza. The creek next to the plaza should be running well thanks to all the rain we've had - and yes, there are fish in the creek.
