Our family decided to not by "things" for Christmas, but to have an experience instead. So we chose to do a bike ride with Undiscovered Country Tours. We had never done a tour with them but decided we liked the reviews and the personal response we got from Terry the owner It was magnificent. Top notch bikes, (all carbon) sized and fit to us when we arrived. Accommodations were not the usual run of the mill type hotels. They were unique, spacious and had all amenities. Daryl and Laura were the best and sweetest. On time, well organized and fun to be with. I would highly recommend this company to anyone wanting a great biking experience. We have told all our Colorado friends. We are in the process of planning our next trip with them.

We took the California Central Coast ride with Undiscovered Country Tours in April 2009.
This was the first fully supported ride my wife and I had been on, and we were completely satisfied and delighted with our experience.

The daily rides averaged about 50 miles each, and were mostly of moderate difficulty. The itinerary took us from the inland valleys with large commercial farms to the rolling hills of the beautiful wine country to the magestic pacific shoreline. For additional excitement there was a challenging 6 mile climb up Mount Figueroa on the last day.

The rides were carefully planned for maximum benefit of the scenery and lack of automobile traffic. All of the accomodations were off the beaten path, and each was uniquely beautiful and comfortable. The meal planning and restaurant choices were great, with the price of breakfast and dinner rolled into the tour fee. Our tour guide Brennan was humorous, pleasant ,and helpful, with excellent knowledge of local geography and culture.

Road bicycles were provided as part of the package, although you can bring your own bike if you like. The bikes were of good quality and modification were easily made based on individual rider preference. (Make sure that you let the tour operators know you will be using their bikes.)

We had plenty of van support during our ride, with as much contact for sag support,, repairs, directions, and food and water as we needed. My wife opted not to ride the entire mileage several days, and being picked up in the van for return to the hotel was never a problem.

This was a wonderful cycling holiday for us, and Undiscovered Country Tours delivered on all of their promises with great support, excellent planning and wonderful services, at a surprisingly reasonable price.

We hope to return in the future for another ride with the same company.

I just returned from a 6-day cycling trip with Undiscovered Country Bike Tours. This was my first organized bike tour, and it met, perhaps exceeded, my expectations.

The tour went from Monterey, south on California Route 1 all the way to Cambria, and finally inland to Paso Robles.

My Excellent rating is based on the following:

1. Routes. This seems like a no-brainer (just go south!), but it's not. The routes were designed with ample time for stopping for photos along the spectacular coastline, and also offered extra challenges for riders who wanted more. For example, on Day 2, we had the option of a difficult 7 mile climb up Nacimiento Road, off Route 1. Not all riders opted for this, but the fact that some riders did it, did not cause any problems for the full group. Also, the route on the optional day's ride was very challenging, and a lot of fun, and it was different from the coastal riding we had been doing up to that point.

2. Guides. We had Laura and Daryl as our guides. A married couple, they took turns each day with one driving the van and the other cycling with us guests. They are California natives, they know the roads and each other very well, but they especially made all of us happy all throughout the whole trip. They took care of every detail - whether it was a small adjustment on seat hight, making sure our luggage was in our rooms, or encouraging us to push ourselves on challenging parts of the ride, they were there, and happy to do it.

3. Bicycles. From the outset, I felt confident that I was in good hands with using a bicycle from UDC. After initial registration for the trip, I received a package with a tape measure and a schematic drawing of a bike, to provide my bike measurements. My setup is slightly unusual, which UDC noticed, and checked with me to verify. Upon arrival, the bike was perfectly fit, with just some minor saddle adjustments necessary, since I brought my own saddle from home. The Scott bikes were in good mechanical condition, and we had no mechanicals during the entire trip. My friend rented a Garmin - it was a great idea for someone to try out using a Garmin, if you don't already own one. The unit came pre-loaded with all of the routes for the trip.

4. Accommodations. All of the hotels we stayed in were top-notch.

5. Food. Breakfast and dinner were included as part of the trip price, and the restaurants were all terrific. In Big Sur we didn't have any choice, but we were already staying at Big Sur Lodge, *the* place to stay. The dinners in Cambria and Paso Robles were terrific, and this is from a New Yorker!

6. Transportation. The tour ended in Paso Robles. Included in the trip price was Amtrak train fare back to Salinas, with transfer to Monterey. This was the only part of the trip that was not perfect. It is not UDC's fault that Amtrak was an hour late. However, I would have preferred if UDC listed the trip as ending in Paso Robles, and then giving us the option of Amtrak back to Monterey. If I had to make a choice, I probably would have preferred to rent a car earlier in the day, and go directly to LA or SF for flights back to NYC. Hindsight is 20/20 though! In this domain, I could be nit-picky and make my rating a 5-1/2.

The biggest compliment I can give is that the day after the tour, my friend and I logged on to their website to see what other tours were available that we could do next year.

Thanks UDC, and thanks Daryl and Laura!

My husband and I have just finished the Undiscovered Wine Country and Pacific Coast 6 day bike tour and will struggle to find enough positive words to describe it - although PHENOMENAL comes close. Our expectations were exceeded in every way and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

We were lucky enough to have our guides, Daryl and Laura, to ourselves, which meant we had a very flexible, personal experience. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they did everything they could to make the trip as perfect as possible - with much success!! The routes were well thought out with great coffee and lunch stops planned in, and flexibility for longer options if you want it. Great support is provided along the way in the form of a vehicle to meet up with that can either take the miles out of your legs (although why would you want to miss out on these great rides) or to supply you with drinks, snacks and encouragement.

The bikes provided are high quality and we had no issues. We were lucky to survive the 6 days with no punctures or mechanicals, although if we had we're sure it would have been no problem.

The accommodation is varied, but in all cases excellent, as is the food. It is rare to find this combination of a proper road bike tour with top end accommodation and food, as well as great company in the shape of the guides. We were very sad to finish the tour and hope to meet Daryl and Laura again sometime in the future as they became much more than just guides over the 6 days.

So, I decided to fly out with BA (another seamless flight BTW) to a pal's place in Orinda just outside San Francisco. It was raining cats and dogs when I got there and had to hold off on my first training cycle ride (post injury). When the weather abated, I borrowed my pal's bike and set off. I should point out that Orinda and the surrounding area is fairly hilly. I crawled up a couple of inclines and then zoomed downhill at breakneck speed. I heard something go pop and duly braked. Given my age and general state that of delapidation, I duly checked myself first. Nothing. I then checked the bike. The front wheel spoke had snapped in two. Ride over. So, I did a search for a bike rental that delivered. I found Undiscovered Country Tours (www.udctours.com). The website is truly excellent. It allows the user to select and configure the bike of their choosing. After a few clicks, I selected a Specialized Roubaix with all the trimmings including pedals for the shoes I brought from the UK. Payment was seamless as was the communication (which was achieved by email). A day or so later, Mike personally hand delivered the bike. Mike gave me detailed insight about the bike and the popular routes in the area. I thanked him and looked forward to getting the show on the road. A day or so later, I set out and realised I had selected the wrong pedals online. An emailed photo of my cleats to UDC resulted in Terry getting in touch and explaining in a very nice way that I had selected the wrong cleats but could get the ones I needed. A day or so later, Terry turned up and duly replaced them. Simple. The following days saw me do the 3 Bears, Skyline Boulevard and, as per Mike's suggestion, an attempt at Mount Diablo (reached 2600ft but had to turn back to loss of light). All I can say is that UDC were brilliantly professional, competent and enthusiastic about their business and the excellent service they offer. They also are very personable and experienced enough to be understanding about my embarrassing mistake (pedals). They truly saved my ride. For this I am grateful. If you are in the area, get these guys to sort you out with a bike or even a tour. They clearly like what they do and are indeed very, very good. And they collect the bike when you're done. Brilliant.

A fantastic first group cycling experience. My husband and I joined 8 others (who were tons of fun) and did the Oct 23 Undiscovered Wine Country and Pacific Coast 6 day tour. All the stars aligned and we had great weather. Our guides, Mike and Mike, were fantastic; great company and attended to our every need. The Scott bikes were excellent and fitted us perfectly. The hotels were extremely comfortable, H2 in Healdsberg is a LEED hotel and has a terrific bar - Spoonbar. The meals were also excellent and sadly I have to confess that I did not lose a speck of weight because of it, regardless of the mileage we did. Every day offered something different and I felt like we got a really good taste of the area. This tour is challenging at times and I was pooped by the final day but I wouldn't hesitate to sign up for another tour. Spectacular way to see some countryside. Loved the small group and attention to detail that Undiscovered provides.

Excelent experience all around. Our guides Daryl and Laura Spano were tremendous hosts, always prepared for every day including details, good advice on the rides, and on safety.

The hotels and meals were first class. The bikes were of good quality and well maintained.

Would love to do it again.

I was competing in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, and the option of either shipping my bike from New York, or renting something locally. I would normally much rather ride my own bike, but that was looking to be 300 to 400 USD which I am fine with paying, but was also concerned re any damage to the bike. So I thought I would at least explore renting, and I am glad I did. There are local companies in SF, but UDC offered much higher end bikes and free drop off and collection which seemed like an excellent deal. The web site was easy to browse, gave lots of options such as TT bars, select your own pedals etc. and was easy to book and pay. Their customer service over the phone was also excellent as I phoned them to confirm the bike drop off and pick up.

Ultimately I rented a Specialized Tarmac for 115 USD for 3 days! It was dropped off with the front desk on the Friday before I arrived, and then they collected it on Monday. They included a saddle bag and a free inner tube with two CO2 cartridges. The bike was in excellent condition and performed flawlessly on the bike section of the triathlon.

All in all - if you need a proper road bike to rent and want good service from a company that really cares, UDC covers it.

Thanks UDC for helping make my Escape from Alcatraz awesome!!

Great experience from pre-order, ordering, post order, customer service and quality of the bikes. Needed to modify order. No problem. Felt informed end to end on process. The quality of bikes were superb. I'll be using Undiscoverd Country Bike Tours again.

My husband and I just completed a weekend bike tour with UDC tours cycling thru the Wine Country of Santa Ynez Valley and we loved it. It was our first guided tour and we choose UDC because they specialize in California and all the reviews we read, had nothing but positives to say about the experience. The tour was based in Solvang at The Hadsten House; which offered very nice and comfortable lodging along with a very much appreciated outdoor hot tub and indoor pool. We met our guides, Laura & Daryl, on Saturday where we, along with the other 5 cyclists in our group, were greeted with a backpack filled with cycling related "goodies", fitted with top-notch Scot bikes, personalized water bottles, and a meticulous route map with turn by turn directions. Both Laura & Daryl rode with us the first day to make sure we were acclimated to our bikes and the area.

Over the next two days, either Laura or Daryl rode with our group while the other followed in the "sag wagon" to offer support as needed or to drive ahead and set-up a nice picnic lunch. Really fabulous riding over the weekend included pedaling along beautiful backroads past vineyards and farms, all while enjoying breathtaking views in Ballard and Foxen Canyon. Yes, those views provide a scenic distraction while climbing (ascending) the canyons and a beautiful "reward" while enjoying the downward descents! Each day of very satisfying cycling ended with a stop in town at the Bulldog Cafe to regroup and swap stories followed by a really nice dinner out with the whole group at two area restaurants in Solvang: Cecco's and Mirabelle's.

UDC tours takes care of just about everything while you're on the tour; and truly, seems to put a lot of thought into ensuring that each rider has a successful and enjoyable experience, which includes the little things like having an ample supply of energy snacks "just in case" (which I ended up needing the first day out). Our guides were great, knowledgeable, very warm and friendly. The quality of the bikes is top notch and scenery hard to beat! We are considering booking another trip in California next Fall and would not hesitate to recommend UDC for anyone considering a bike tour.
