- GunnerNateLos Angeles, California94 contributionsSomething different in wine tasting! What a wonderful wine tasting experience! Please note that they do not take walk-ins. You will need to make a reservation. We checked in at the front desk and were handed a glass of white wine while we waited for others that were scheduled to join us. The group is limited to 10, so it was small enough that we felt comfortable and not lost in the crowd. Our tour guide was outstanding and made use feel at home! Unlike other wineries, our tasting was right out of the barrels. A completely different experience from our tastings the day before. Our guide (Jeff) was very knowledgeable and informative. While his job was to speak on the process of wine making, he was able to answer all the questions thrown at him during the tour. At the end of the tour, we were served pizza and some more wine while we spoke to other members of our tour to compare notes and get more acquainted. I would highly recommend this kind of wine tasting experience if you are in the Napa Valley.Visited July 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten July 20, 2021
- barfiemermaidCosta Mesa, California145 contributionsJust buy a bottle to look around.Didn't reserve a tasting /tour but did get a look around the grounds and tasting areas by offering to buy a bottle of wine. Beautiful grounds around the parking area and the actual tasting areas would be great for events. The bathrooms at the entrance are uniquely designed. It was fun just ot look around.Visited July 2020Written August 5, 2020

Was the third of three wineries of the day so maybe that played a factor. The first 20 minutes of the tour is about the Italian theme and how every stone and piece of marble was imported from Italy. All I could think of is “Why?” and “Who cares?”. It felt like phoney like we were in Caesar’s Palace in Vegas.
Our group guide was knowledgeable, but odd and I think he had too much wine by the end of the day. The barrel tasting and wine thief, while interesting the first time you see it, is not the best wine tasting experience IMO.
The experiences at Stags Leap Cellars and particularly Caymus earlier in the day we’re head and shoulders better than this one.

For $120 per person this is a complete rip off. The main entrance of the estate has been built to look like an Italian Villa but to me it felt like I was standing in the entrance to an Italian themed Disney ride. You have to stay in the main reception area and then are led into the “cave” which is a long hallway that has barrels in it and the lights have been turned low. It’s not a cave at all. Your entire “cave” tour is this one hallway and the “estate” part of the tour is standing in the reception hall.
The tasting itself was interesting and educational but nowhere near worth $120 with tiny pours of about 5 wines. After the tour you are led back into the reception hall where tater tot’s and a subpar pepperoni pizza are served (the kind of food you would get at a rest stop in an interstate when there are no other choices). You will stand the entire time even during the food portion of the tour and multiple tours are going on at once in this same hallway so it’s noisy. On top of that to add to the theme park experience they are blasting Italian music in the reception area and hallway aka “cave” the entire time. For $120 per person take your business elsewhere.

Very unique experience. You go into the cave and do the tasting where they use a wine thief to extract the wine directly from the barrel. After the tasting food was welcome as well (especially the tater tots).

Pretty estate. We were guided by Roxanne and she was great, super generous with the tastings! We were able to explore more of the property once the official tasting ended.

Price was out of line with the other 10 vineyards we visited. We felt rushed to finish our tastes before the next pour. We were expecting a cave experience but the “cave” is actually a hallway on the same level as the check in lobby that is decorated as a cave. The historic winery in Napa is the site that you want to visit for an actual cave experience. It, however, is only open Friday and Saturdays.

While we did not plan a tasting there this year..their cave is currently under renovation, we stopped in to purchase a bottle. The gardens are lovely and their wines NEVER disappoint. We have been big fans of their cave tour and their BIG reds are amazing. We enjoyed our purchased bottles in the evenings and are always happy to leave Del Dotto with some of the best wines of the region.

We did the tour with Doug and he was amazing! He was very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. 100% would recommend. All the wines we tasted were great, and we bought a few bottles on our way out.

It was the first time that my family visited Del Dotto Estate Winery & Cave in St. Helena and it will be the last time. We will NEVER go back. The lady that greeted us was not friendly and very rude. I should have gotten her name. Granted that we were late due to traffic and we gave pizza that was served to us to our nephews. We understand that the pizza was for the guests. It was our lack of judgement. We were wrong. But the way this lady treated us and my nephews was rude. She kicked my nephews out of the building for having pizza. They just kids for crying out loud. She doesn’t stop there. She went outside and rudely kicked my mom who was standing outside by the door waiting for us to go to the parking lot. She basically told my mom don’t stand in front of the building, go to parking lot. This lady has no business and not qualify to work in the hospitality industry. She needs to take guest hospitality 101 class. The gentleman that gave us the tour was nice and friendly. But, this rude lady ruined our experience at your Estate. There are different ways to handle this type of situation. She doesn’t have to be rude about it. I will not recommend your Estate to any of my friends and family. Your Estate is not kids friendly and not family oriented. We went to many vineyards in Napa and Sonoma many times. We never experience any rude and unfriendly individual until we visited your Estate.

HI. At the St. Helena Del Dotto, do they serve cheese, meats, and fresh pizza after the cave tour? For $60, I would think so. Thank You.

Yes - and you will taste meats that are locallly produced at that. They are delicious. Try the olive oil, which is produced from olive trees on the property. Two different pizzas are also served, one made with the sausage produced locally. It’s a wonderful finish to this unique tasting experience.

Did you prefer your experience at the St. Helena location, or the Napa location. We will probably just go to one location, but want to choose the best.

I have been to both locations. The st Helena location is very different. It’s like a Tuscan palace, lots of gold, tiles, crystals etc. very elegant.
The Napa/atlas peak property is smaller and darker, more intimate and almost more reverence. There is prob more focus on the wine in the Napa
Location vs st Helena is wine + the amazing Italian art, cave etc.
Bottom line, you get treated the same in both and they have replicated a high quality experience in both places. Yes they are different but both are amazing and the wine is off the charts.
