California Gold Rush: The Sacramento Grid on a Self-Guided Bicycle Audio Tour

How did Sacramento come to be California's capital city?

What was the city's founder, a Swiss named Johann Sutter, doing here in what once was Spanish territory?

How did his efforts to expand a fort here at the confluence of two rivers lead to the discovery of gold and the rush to come get it?

Learn the answers and more by taking this 2-hour self-guided GPS tour by bicycle. Bikes can be rented in Old Sacramento at Practical Cycle. Also, at bike racks throughout the city from a bike share program lock them if you leave them. The tour departs and finishes at the Capitol, stopping along the way at markers and structures that tell us about the founding of this city and the Gold Rush of 1849.

The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Worth a quick visit and certainly if you have a school-age child with you, they should be fascinated with the comparison to their school. Volunteer guide/teacher is knowlegeable, pleasant and keen to inform..Free entry and, depending on child's reaction, should need 10-15 minutes of your time.

I want to commend Ana Quintana who is outstanding in customer service. She knows her repeat customers and I am always greated with a smile and a hug. In observing her she treats all her customers with kindness and efficiency. I will wait as long as necessary to make sure I get Ana and heard the same comment from many others. I requested to talk with Omar, the restaurant manager and he treated me with kindness and confirmed he had gotten lots of comments from others about Ana. I was impressed that Omar took the time to listen. Please do whatever it takes to keep Ana because she represents your restaurant in a most positive way. Also I have eaten there many times and always enjoy the great selection of foods.

Clean, not much history demonstrated or detailed. It is a short walk to the other site seeing areas and restrauants/bars in the area.

What a great surprise to find this little place. Lots of history, old newspapers and so on. Just fun to read about the early years and trying to scratch out a city.
