To visit this fort in the middle of bustling Sacramento is to get a real sense for how the west was settled. You have to imagine it as sitting in the middle of the empty frontier with nothing around for miles. The importance of this place is highlighted by the rebuilding effort that took place in the 1890's, a clear... More

We only had just over an hour to spend here; wish we had a minimum of two hours. Lots to read, lots to see.

I came here as a 4th grade field trip, but live too far now, so I brought my now 4th grader. Kids were fascinated with "how things used to look" and thought it cool that one of the buildings is still original. I made them fill out the educational questionnaire; my kids weren't too thrilled about that, but they learned... More

This state park is reasonable admission with docents wearing period attire! We were fortunate to be there when several ladies were eating their Thanksgiving meal they cooked in cast iron pans there!

Having passed by this Park for years, it was good to finally visit and explore the place. Sutter's Fort has significance for anyone interested in the early history of California and it's change of governance as it changed over the years before becoming part of the U.S. It also lets you know that not everyone became rich because of the... Great for the kids - especially in 4th grade during CA State History teaching. Right in the heart of Sacramento.

Sutter dreamed of creating an empire & it started with building this fort. His story unfolds as you go from room too room in this state historic park. You learn about Sutter & the many peole who lived in the fort during its existance.

They replicated the original fort and made it fit to the available property midtown by shortening the the perimeter. The old central building is the original main offices. The buildings along the inside walls are full of artifacts that reflect the 1800's and the Mexican/American mixture of cultures (with a little Swiss thrown in for good measure). A fascinating hour... Our tour group was there for an evening tour and then dinner. The in period docents were excellent. The exhibits are very good. The restored work areas are excellent. The buffet was good.

Although billed as "Sutter's Fort", the location actually is a reconstructed copy of the original. We found the "stuff" in each of the many rooms to be interesting, but the location just average.
