My grandson (15) and I visited here on a very hot Saturday in August. The overall story was very enlightning, and I have to say at the end I really felt sorry for Sutter, who, after getting things started was damned by the success of his lumber mill which was the start of the gold rush

Right in the middle of Sacramento is this beautiful little treasure. Extremely interesting to learn about Sacramento's early days and how this fort played a role. The history volunteers are awesome!

Great Historical stop! My favorite part was watching my son, who just finished 4th grade (CA history) tell his 8yr old brothers all about John Sutter, the Donner Party and Gold discovery. You really get a sense of life during the time, the many trades that were needed to make it successful, and really get an appreciation of just how... More

What's most fascinating about my visit of Sutter's Fort is that it transcended me through time. One step into the fort and you'll immediately forget being in the middle of the bustling and modern downtown Sacramento. The scent and scenery takes me to the great year of 1849 however occasionally I get a glimpsed of the newly built Sutter Hospital... More

When you enter Sutter's Fort it is like stepping back into the past. The fort was built during the gold rush and served the needs of the miners. It also offered protection from the hostiles. It is a lot of fun and it is a good source of history.

All of my children visited Sacramento during their elementary years which included Fort Sutter. I've never been there until recently. I wasn't at all impressed with the outside part. But once I stepped into the fort, I felt as if I went back in the 1800's! A great place to visit. I now appreciate this part of California's history.

I tend to like history in general and this museum was just 2 blocks from where I used to live. As such I was really excited to check it out and was not disappointed. They recreate the site of Sutter's fort and have actors present to tell you about how things worked in this small community. There is a host... More

We were in the area with a grade school aged child and also a 5 year old when the temperature was over 100 so only allowed ourselves an hour to look at the fort. Would have spent more time on a cooler day. Many interesting workshop rooms to look into. There is metered street parking next to the fort. There... More
