Nice place to learn some California history. You can walk around the outside of the Fort and enjoy the fountains in the pond free of charge. If you want to tour the inside of the fort it is $5 per person which is very reasonable for entertainment in this area. Just be sure to carry in some cold water if it is warm.

A nice historic gem. Very nicely preserved and a great look at the past. Interesting history as this is the place that the rescuers of the infamous Donner party came from and it is here where the survivors ended up recuperating. Many other interesting points of history. A few enactors giving presentations makes it a nice place to visit and learn.

With the closures from the pandemic, I was bummed that I wouldn't get to visit this local treasure personally BUT their FREE virtual programs made it seem like I was almost actually there! Jared and Maggie were funny and punny and taught me things that as a California history buff I had never heard about! They were clearly adjusting to filming themselves instead of having live groups, but they kept me interested and engaged for the whole hour. The programs were geared for kids but were still interesting for adults. Plus I got to get up close and personal with a real covered wagon, adobe oven, grist mill, and ship's pully! Can't wait to visit when they reopen!

We were so excited about seeing this first but… the Fort was built to accommodate Gold rush; turned out 3/4 of the fort was under construction and we only saw 4 rooms furnished. 4 rangers sitting around and no one giving tours or telling you about the fort. Thank God it was free because it wouldn’t have been worth $2.00.

It's a small Fort but given its historical significance to the area it is worth a visit. Due to some work being carried out admission was free when I visited. The exhibits were very good, offering an insight into what life was like back in the day.

Stopped off at Sutters Fort whilst passing through Sacramento. It was interesting to get the history of the Fort and how it and it’s previous occupants contributed to the formation of California.
The staff were excellent and very informative.
Entry price was very reasonable and we all enjoyed the visit.

Enjoyed wandering around the fort on a self guided tour. There were helpful staff members on hand to answer any questions you may have. I would say 45-90 minutes should give the average visitor enough time to see everything. We were there about 1 1/2 hrs and didn't feel that we were rushing, but if I had kids with me I may have wanted more time.

My wife and I came for a walk in the park, but because we had a small dog with us, they didn't let us in. The federal website of this park indicates that you can visit it with animals! We were not even sold a ticket at the ticket office, and when I asked why I was not allowed and the fact that the site indicated that it was possible, the park employee said that the federal website contained false information. So I don't recommend animal lovers to go to this place!

was looking forward to a visit as i hadn't been to the fort in many years. i won't be back. the first thing is you watch a video "about the history of the fort." it basically tells you that Sutter was a crap person and everything he accomplished was bad.....................

It’s a very small site. I get to see the history of the Sutter Fort. The ticket is five dollars but I spent a lot on gifts lol. If you don’t want to get inside, the park outside is also a good place to visit.
I wouldn’t put it on the top of the list, but if you have a lot of time to visit downtown, you can take a look at it.

Depends somewhat on your level of interest. I had an 7 year old and 3 year old, so an hour was good for us.

Ja, es ist beindrückend was der "General" Sutter hier geleistet hat. Dennoch ist sein Geburtshaus in Kandern (Deutschland), also kein gebürtiger Schweizer!!

We brought in water bottles and had no comments. I do not know if food or OTHER beverages are restricted. I believe the Indian Museum next door restricts food and drinks so it may apply as well. I will check.
