Its a self guided tour, but there are some great docents there to answer any questions. It was really interesting and good examples of life back in the days. Bathrooms and a little gift shop.

Great docents! You can easily walk through the rooms and exhibits (masks required inside) to learn more about Sutter’s life and work here. Note that gold was not discovered here-that’s at the mill near Coloma. About an hour and you e seen everything here. Easy street parking nearby.

Enjoyed wandering around the fort on a self guided tour. There were helpful staff members on hand to answer any questions you may have. I would say 45-90 minutes should give the average visitor enough time to see everything. We were there about 1 1/2 hrs and didn't feel that we were rushing, but if I had kids with me I may have wanted more time.

With the closures from the pandemic, I was bummed that I wouldn't get to visit this local treasure personally BUT their FREE virtual programs made it seem like I was almost actually there! Jared and Maggie were funny and punny and taught me things that as a California history buff I had never heard about! They were clearly adjusting to filming themselves instead of having live groups, but they kept me interested and engaged for the whole hour. The programs were geared for kids but were still interesting for adults. Plus I got to get up close and personal with a real covered wagon, adobe oven, grist mill, and ship's pully! Can't wait to visit when they reopen!

This is a well preserved artifact from the dawn of the California Gold rush. There are kids activities here as well as re-enactors.

Took my grand-daughter here as she loves living history. Almost every saturday you can go here and see how the first settlers to California lived. There are re-inactors demonstrating everything from baking to basketmaking. Motion activated recordings tell you about the many facets of the fort. Once inside the walls of the fort you feel you have truly stepped back in time to the 1840's. Don't miss out on the doll from one of the surviving members of the Donner party.

Right in the middle of a now major city and the State Capitol of California sits the starting point of the "shout heard around the world". It is a rather subdued setting with white walls, wooden gates and non-paved paths that was the seat of a visionary man who had no idea and was left behind when he found he had GOLD on his property. This cluster of buildings rings of a more peaceful time of agriculture and Spanish Values imported to the "New World" and to remember this makes you think what old California must have been like. This makes a visit here more meaningful because the outside ;resent world is blocked by the white walls if this past center of civilization.

Sutter’s Fort was Sacramento before there was a Sacramento. From here, volunteers rescued many of the doomed Donner Party. It was Sutter who sent Marshall upthe American River to build a saw mill......and he discovered GOLD. There are docents always there to teach pioneer skills. Great trip for school kids and history buffs.

An easy self guided tour, with audio messages in most places, a very important location for California, the fort takes up 2 city blocks and the large building in the middle, is the original, bur most of the walls have been rebuilt because the original bricks were used to build other parts of Sacramento - glad they saved this part of history - had a plesant day strolling around.
