We had a delightful tasting at ELIZABETH SPENCER in Rutherford where we experienced uniformly, high-quality wines. We’ve seen the sign for the winery many times, but never stopped in - we were pleasantly surprised!

The owners are a couple, Elizabeth and Spencer. Spencer was on site, and was kind enough to stop by and chat with us. They opened in 1998 and the brick building used to be the city’s post office.

The outdoor space was comfortable and the servers made us feel safe. We enjoyed the Signature Tasting flight very much and we plan to return! It’s right off Highway 29 and worth a stop! To view more winery reviews, follow me on Instagram @travelgalcathy415

I was on my way to Calistoga and decided to make a random stop to Elizabeth Spencer tasting room. So happy I did! I love that it is set up like a cafe where you sit down and enjoy the wine experience. Stewart and rest of the staff were amazing and treated my dog as If she was the Queen.

The service here was very good and the wines were good as well. To be honest, there wasn't anything here I was too crazy about but the people I went with ended up buying a membership! There was a nice variety of wines and I would say it's worth a stop but is not a MUST stop. That being said, the people I went with LOVED it, so maybe it just wasn't for me.

My two friends and I recently visited this winery. They are right across the street from the BV winery which is a big well known winery. As we were walking from our car, we noticed Elizabeth Spencer Winery and I remembered I had visited them a few years ago and that it was very quaint and unique so we strolled in to see if a tasting would be available. We were met by a very friendly hostess named Tracy. We inquired as to how a tasting would work and she told us we could basically create our own tasting based on what wines we like or prefer. The three of us immediately felt welcome and "at home". She led us outside as it was a beautiful sunny day in Napa and we all sat together on a bench and began our wine tasting experience. I say experience because it began with Tracy giving us such a big warm welcome. She is very engaging and easy going. My two friends had never been to Napa before so they were eager to learn more about "California wine country" -- Tracy was so informative and and helpful. She took the time to explain the geology of the land, the weather and how it affects the grapes throughout the growing season. She has amazing knowledge of the area and like any good teacher is ready and happy to share this great information. I actually thought she might be the owner because she is so passionate about the winery and the entire area. I remembered thinking I hope the owners realize how valuable of an associate she is to their business. We stayed for over an hour and enjoyed her wealth of information and friendship. When we left, we all decided we would definitely come back here on our next trip to wine country. Thank you Tracy for a fun and unique wine tasting. We loved it.

Our group visited Elizabeth Spencer and were treated to an outdoor experience like no other. Levi was attentive and informative and made us feel at home. The courtyard is magnificent and very welcoming. The wines were exceptional and you must try the Reisling.

We sought out small boutique style wineries for our Napa visit and the Blind Tasting at Elizabeth Spencer was our favorite.

We loved this winery and the story of how Elizabeth and Spencer met, the wines are very good and Tracy was very helpful and personable. We met with Tracy our wine educator for our blind tasting and what was supposed to be a one hour tasting turned into two and a half hours of education, tasting and delightful company.

If you are looking for a winery that is "off the beaten path" check out Elizabeth Spencer you will not regret it!

I have been to Elizabeth Spencer only a handful of times (I live on the East Coast), but make a point of stopping by whenever in Napa/Sonoma area. Every experience has been the Napa alternative...and that's a good thing. A couple points I'd make:

- It's a tiny historic old building (the Rutherford Post Office) converted into a tasting room. If you are looking for the mansion or castle-like Mondavi size joints, this isn't it. Do those places, they are amazing. But then come to ES for a contrast, and generally a more personal experience.

- A lot of Napa is Cabernets, mostly from Napa grown fruit. ES has those, and they are excellent wines. But they also have various other wines (chards, syrah, chenin blanc, etc) from Sonoma and Medocino fruit. Bear in mind, this is a winery, not a vineyard. They have a varied assortment of varietals as a result...personally I like that because it shows you what a wine maker can do with grapes from different appellations.

- The above being said, they have awesome cab sauv's. Sure you can go to some ultra pricey, reservation-only wineries that make maybe two wines per vintage and have some cabs that are amazing. But ES has cabs that are affordable (for Napa)...around $60 will get you a bottle that you'll be happy to have in your collection...it's VERY good wine that you can tell the winemaker takes pride in.

- Staff: I've never had anyone less than helpful, friendly, fun. Maybe they hired a dud for a while (based on reading another review), but I can't imagine someone rude would last long there. It seems to be a tasting room where they encourage visitors to enjoy, relax and not take anything too seriously. When I've visit, I typically chat a little with the staff. Once they find out what you like, what you don't, they often will pull bottles out not on the tasting list for a little bonus tasting. Discovered some of my fav's at ES this way!

- A big plus, Rutherford Grill is just across the street! Great restaurant...sit outside and bring a bottle from ES...no corkage fee!

- Last comment...try the Rose. I know it's a Rose, usually not that interesting and certainly not a complex wine. But just try it! It's delicious and refreshingly dry and fruity.

Elizabeth Spencer is a small winery with big wines and a huge welcome in the little village of Rutherford. It has personality plus, yet minus the big tasting room crowds. Settle into its lovely patio with some of wine country's most addictive breadsticks and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by a series of high-end wines crafted with verve and style. Don't believe this veteran TripAdvisor reviewer? Then consider that Elizabeth Spencer (which takes its name from the first names of the married couple who own it) is among the gems in a wondrous guidebook -- "Back Lane Wineries of Napa" by Tilar Mazzeo. This little insider guide has proved so popular that its third edition is now in the process of being renewed and revised. Mazzeo describes Elizabeth Spencer as "one of wine country's most charming finds." We certainly concurred after our visit here.
