When we went there was a very peaceful ambiance. It was not crowded and there were lots of birds to watch. Great for a day trip if you live close by, worth visiting if your already visiting Idyllwild.

Shade is spread throughout the campground but the ones I remember having shade is Camp 4 right by the showers.
