The Mission Inn Museum is primarily a tour of the Mission Inn, a huge and luxurious old hotel in downtown Riverside. It is conducted by a nonprofit historical society.
The guided tour takes guests through the courtyards and lobby as the guide explains the history, various architectural styles, artwork and other features of the Inn. There is a one room museum with a few items, but the tour is the way to see the hotel without staying as a guest.
The tour was expensive at $26 and nearly 1.5 hours long, which was just too much. Endless details about the owners, the architects, the construction materials used, the cost, and more. The Mission Inn is an impressive structure with an interesting history, but this isn’t one of the world’s great buildings and has no amazing architectural or historical significance: it’s just an old hotel that has had many famous guests. It’s sufficient to take visitors to the main locations and give an overview. 30-45 minutes would have been enough. Nobody cares what company sold the doorknobs.
The Inn is also the centerpiece of Riverside’s Festival of Lights during the holiday season, but these exterior lights can be viewed from the sidewalk and streets.

The Mission Inn Museum if a foundation for the preservation and historical resource for the Mission Inn. They have interesting exhibits at the museum and the descents there are very helpful and informative about the history of the Mission Inn and the city of Riverside. You can sign up for descent led tours of the museum. They also sells books and souvenirs of the Mission Inn. I found less expensive postcards and magnets of the Mission Inn versus the Mission Inn gift shop. I recommend visiting this museum if your interested in the background and history of the Mission Inn

Historic hotel, not too far from Los Angeles. It has a couple of nice restaurants and bars on site. The city area nearby was a little sketchy with shady people and homeless /mentally ill people walking by and hanging out. Has a decent pool area. I suggest staying at the facility for your stay.

Several out of state friends arrived for a week visit and expressed a desire to explore the sites of the local area. Headed off to Riverside, California to explore the local culture and various sites. First stop the Mission Inn, located on Mission Inn Avenue. To our dismay, the Mission Inn and all associated restaurants are closed due to the Corona Virus regulations. After walking around the complex and examining the exterior of the building, we landed up on the Pedestrian Mall in front of the Mission Inn Museum (located at the corner of Main Street and Mission Inn Avenue). The Mission Inn Museum is a very small 2 room museum which displayed several artifacts from the Mission Inn. The Mission Inn Museum and Store is open daily, 0930-1630. A Raincross bell, several items of furniture belong to the Miller family (original owner of the Mission Inn) and a large collection of paintings of the Mission Inn over the years hang on the walls. The second room features a nice coral ceramic flower display and a large model of the original Mission Inn. The Mission Inn Museum is also the starting point for all Mission Inn tours, All Tours are currently suspended. The majority of this establishment is dedicated to a Museum Store which sells unique Mission Inn souvenirs (books, tee shirts, local art, stationary, and jewelry items). Staff is friendly and helpful. No entry fee charged. Interesting museum but extremely limited display. If you are in the area and have nothing else to do, suggest stopping in for a quick look.

Hello!
We do welcome you to come back once we're open again. Our tours and gallery space are currently closed, and those are the whole of the experience we offer for guests. Come back for a tour, see our soon to be installed exhibit Toward Peace and we think you won't be disappointed!

We visited the Mission on a whim during the Festival of Lights. Although the rest of Riverside took down their lights before New Year's Eve, the Mission was decked out! I recommend the official tour for about $20 ($25 for the last tour of the day). I can't remember or tour guide's name, but I think it had a "Jean" in it. She was very knowledgeable about the history and had many anecdotal facts about the Mission and the families that have kept it going all these years. The architecture is varied and beautiful. After the tour, we toured the outside of the building to take in the millions of lights on display. We had a delicious dinner in the court yard. The restaurant was al fresco, but the heaters kept the chilly night air at bay. It was a wonderful visit!

Mission Inn Museum was my top search result of “10 Things To Do In Riverside”. The building sits near the intersection of Main St. and Mission Inn Ave. I booked the 75 minute walking tour. Check-in was easy and Meredith served as docent. Highlights include: The bust and plaque dedicated to educator and reformer Booker T. Washington, the history, culture, artistic value, and the lasting impact of the citrus community. Coming to Riverside? Start here. (and ask for Meredith!)

I grew up in Riverside and the Mission Inn Hotel has always been a special place to me. I have taken numerous tours of the Inn, but each time I tour again, I learn something new about this magical place. (For instance, I never knew that the resident macaws have their own private suite.)
The Mission Inn has history and architecture that set it apart from other hotels. A tour is a wonderful way to learn about the Inn. The docents are very knowledgeable and take guests to “hidden” areas unknown to most. I highly recommend!

We loved having the opportunity to tour this venerable hotel. Our docent was Mel and he did an excellent job explaining and answering our questions. There were 5 on our tour. Even though it was rainy, we saw a lot of the property and learned the history. Strongly recommended.

The Mission Inn is a beautiful place, but I cannot recommend staying there during the Festival of Lights. Maybe stay a night or two to see the Lights; then return at a later time to actually enjoy your stay.
During the Festival, there are herds of visitors tromping through the lobby and grounds every afternoon and evening (not wearing masks either), so you find yourself in Grand Central Station when you leave your room.
The Inn itself is lovely, the staff is terrific, the rooms are very comfortable, the food is excellent (we tried all the restaurants). But it's difficult to enjoy in the middle of a mob scene.

A colleague and I had some spare time after a lunch meeting, so we decided to check out this local treasure. The docent was very knowledgeable and eager to share as much as possible in the time allotted. She clearly loves this place and probably could have shared twice as many stories and facts if given the chance. She was a gracious hostess who wanted to make the information personal to us.
I highly recommend a stop here.

Do they charge to enter ? If so how much ?

Hi Victoria,
We do not charge admission for the Museum. If you enjoy your visit, we would appreciate a $2 donation. To take a tour, it is $13 for guests 12 years old and over, free for children 11 years old and under. During the Festival of Lights (November 23, 2018-January 6, 2019), tours are $17 for adults and one child free per paying adult. We recommend making reservations in advance as the holiday tours are popular and fill early! We open reservations on September 1 for the Festival of Lights. Hope that answers your question!
Is it wheelchair and disabled friendly?
Donna G
Riverside, CA58 contributions
As indicated by other responders, the hotel is ADA compliant and is wheelchair accessible. You should remember that this hotel was built long before all current requirements so the path you may have to take may be the "less traveled by." Also the elevator cars are small so if you have a large party with you, you will not all be able to fit into the cars. Allow extra time if your there during a busy season as the usage may impact how long you have to wait. All this may sound challenging, but I believe your stay at the historic hotel will be worth it.
Do you provide refrigerators and hair dryers in the rooms?
Virginia C

I've seen every room in the entire place. Some rooms have a built in microwave and 'frig. They will graciously supply you with a small refrigerator if your room does not already have one if you ask ahead. I believe there is a hairdryer in every room. They are all about service at Mission Inn.
