Had a great time diving around the buoy line next to Hwy 299. Visibility is 15 to 20 feet. With a thermocline about 28 feet. Plenty of fish in the local area to include bass and Cokenee. You can roll over the rocks, grab the...More

As a resident of the area, I have grown up swimming, fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and hiking in and around Whiskeytown. There is so much to do around the lake, with many campsites, beaches, hiking trails, rivers and creeks. The lake is relatively shallow (compared...More

This gem of a park has something for everyone. Boating, fishing, swimming, easy walks, fun hikes, kayaking, stand up paddle boards, wildlife, historical buildings, picnics, amazing views, and I am probably forgetting something else. It was damaged by the Carr fire, but it will be...More

We coated the park recently after the Carr fire. There is a lot of devastation but clean up is happening and the area is still worth seeing! The lake is beautiful and you can still snag some gorgeous pictures and views! New growth of the...More

Whiskeytown Lake is so beautify, but suffered a lot of destruction during the Carr Fire in July. There are currently some areas open to swimming, but check at the Information Center for a map of those areas. Drive by periodically to watch the trees grow...More

I used to live in the Redding area. We used to visit the lake quite frequently. It was a beautiful place to spend a day if you enjoy the outdoors, swimming, canoeing, water sports, picnic. There is a tourist information centre there to help you.

I believe it’s $8 or you can buy a pass for $40 and that includes Lassen Volcanic Park and it’s good for a year from the date of purchase.

Highway 299 closed - wildfire impacting Labor Day vacations (5 Replies)
Many people take highway 299 west from Redding to Humboldt County (Eureka, Arcata, Trinidad, etc.) over Labor Day Weekend. Highway 299 west is currently closed due to a wildland fire that started near Helena (Trinity County). The fire is currently at 2000 acres with zero containment. Conditions in Shasta County is VERY smoky with bits of ash floating to the ground. People planning a weekend on Trinity Lake, Shasta Lake, or Whiskeytown Lake will definitely notice smoke and severely...More

Highway 3 South from Yreka in early November (6 Replies)
We will be heading south from Medford OR to Red Bluff the first week in November. We have made this trip numerous times and thought it might be fun (weather permitting) to take a detour from I-5 and drive the Trinity Alps Scenic Byway (Hwys 3 and 299) past Trinity Lake, through Weaverville and east on 299 to Redding. My research indicates that this road is usually open year round. Goggle maps and MapQuest both list drive time from Yreka to Redding at 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Does this sound...More

Current project on the Buckhorn is almost finished. Drove it yesterday & maybe 50 feet of guardrail yet to be installed. Next phase will start in the Spring '15. Unless we get a nice snow (which all in Trinity County is praying for) you will be fine. The ride down is very nice. The Brewery in Etna serves a great Root beer as well as the other kind. Their Lunches are terrific. Give them a try if you are there around lunch time.

Houseboat Rentals (7 Replies)
Hi We are looking to rent a house boat in the June/July period for approx. 3-4 days (5 adults - 2x70ish, 2x50ish, 1x20ish). We have just been to the San Jose Travel Show & have some info on Forever Houseboat Rentals & Bullards Bar. They are at a number of different lakes but we aren't sure which company to use. Ideally we would like to stay within 4 hrs driving from San Francisco. Has anyone used either of these companies & could give us an honest opinion on their boats, service etc. Also...More

No experience with those but hopefully someone will come along. We did a houseboat at Berryessa a while ago and that was super fun. Lake Shasta is also a popular place for that.
