We wanted an outdoor workout, so the concierge at the Park Hyatt suggested a hike up Iron Mountain in nearby Poway. Only 6 miles, he said. Of course he failed to say it was 3.5 miles up a slippery trail with sand covering rocks and...More

Beautiful desert mountain terrain; however, during the summertime..leave your pup at home! I made the mistake of bringing mine and had to turn back early. I will definitely go back to hike this fall/winter. The hike wasn't strenuous aside from some rocky steep parts and...More

Best time to hike it is winter; in summer, take lots of water! Could be in for a fantastic view all the way to the ocean.

If you're going to try this hike in the heat of summer, I suggest going as early in the day as possible. Bring extra water and a cooling cloth if you have one. A lot of the trail is without shade, and once you get...More

If you want to go up to the Iron Mountain peak, it's not a loop trail. You'll walk 3 miles up the hill and 3 miles down the hill. It's definitely worth it. The view is stunning. Be aware that there is no shade along...More

Distance round trip: ~ 6 miles Time: (Night hike) ~ 3.5 hours with 30 minute break at the top (~7:30-11pm) Difficulty: Moderately easy if you are a hiker. Rocky. This was one of our "training for Mt. Whitney" hikes. I had about 35-38 lbs on...More

A good workout for sure, nothing crazy but not super easy either. Very nice trail to hike. The summit has good views and resting area.

Had a great hike with the wife and pup! Lots of little streams and muddy spots but the view at the top is SPECTACULAR! Worth the miles up and back parking is a pain but a great time!

At the beginning the trail is wide & rather flat. You walk through a line of trees that arch over the trail. After a little, you cross over a creek with a little waterfall below it. Then the climbing begins over large rocks. At some...More

Went today and could see all the way to the ocean - if I squinted! The trail gives you a good workout since most of it is straight up. Like that you can see Ramona on the back side and to San Diego and the...More

Hello Josephine, It is definitely much shorter than the potato chip hike. I do the potato chip in 3-4 hrs and the Iron mountain in 2 hrs. It is still a good and intense workout but not as bad as Potato chip. I have taken a... More

I don't recall the parking lot being the type that get closed off at all. There is a lot of street parking, and sometimes that's where you have to park. This is a busy trail.

There are nice facilities to park and sit, especially at the base and summit, but no camping area along the main trail :)
