Well, this is difficult to rate. First let me start by saying that this is a beautiful and challenging course. This is a private course that is now open to the public. That being said, we would never play there again even if it were free. It's a great course if you have 5 PLUS hours to play a round! We were happy we had our cell phones with us as we played games while we sat and waited on every hole!!! They have no idea how to schedule or manage a tee sheet and/or the course management with lack of marshalls needs to be improved greatly. When we approached the turn to grab a snack (a bag of 1 oz doritos for $1.25)....we ran into another group that told us that they have called the Pro in the proshop to please send a marshall as it is extremely backed up and slow. After 13 holes and 4 hours of play and never seeing a marshall, we gave up and decided to leave! We stopped in the proshop to talk to the pro about our experience and he could care less. Not once did he apologize.
Pros: Beautiful, challenging and scenic
Cons: Very expensive, slow play, no marshalls or beverage carts, no restaurant only a snack shack and unless you're a member, don't expect to be treated very well.
Bottom line: Don't go....Save your money and go play at Plumas Pines or Graeagle and get great courses, great course management and great customer service!!
Very disappointed in Grizzly Ranch!

This review is over five years old. We regret the reviewer had a bad experience in 2012 but that was an anomaly. Please check out our later reviews for a more accurate assessment of what you can expect to experience at Grizzly Ranch Golf Club. You won't be disappointed.

While vacationing in Tahoe for the first time and staying at the Northstar Village, my husband and I decided to make the hour and 10 minute drive to Grizzly Ranch to golf. We are average golfers ( he's a 14 and I'm a 20). We were told it was great. Wow, we were not disappointed! We've golfed at many courses in many places and can say that this course was not only in superior condition and challenging - but fair, but the views were amazing. We played on a Thursday and were allowed to go out as a twosome. We never waited and in fact, felt like we owned the course! The staff here was so friendly and Sam Bonnett was just great as was Dennis. We did not want our round to end! But afterwards, we sat in the chairs outside of the bar enjoying a drink with an unbelievable view. Apparently they have "cabins" to rent ( sure didn't look like your typical cabin to me- more like a house). This place was well worth the drive and the price. We will definitely come back out here (we're from Boston) just to stay at this course and golf. Don't miss this place.

Great course in great condition. The disappointed reviewer is probably often disappointed. If you can't have fun at Grizzly Ranch, you need a new attitude.

I drove up from the Bay area to visit a friend who lives in the area. He took me over to play the course. I live in a golfing community so I play a lot of golf in very good conditions. This course was in fabulous shape with majestic views. It is one of the best courses I have played in years. Some of the holes require unique strategic decisions and others require length and control. The greens were a challenge, but very fair and in great shape. The staff was very friendly, as were the other golfers. The crisp clean mountain air, the abundant sunshine and the wildlife were just added pluses. The surrounding facilities are top notch. I hope to come back and play again.

Our group of 3 stayed in one of the cabins and played golf every day. Gorgeous course, which is challenging but still fun for high handicaps like our group. Have played this course many times and it remains one of our favorites. Great staff, very comfortable accommodations, and fun course. We will be back!

Beautiful track in the portola-graeagle area. Definitely a course you need to play more than once. You'll want to get familiar with the layout and yardage carries if you want a good score. So manage your expectations the first time around and enjoy the course and the scenery.

I'm sure the 1 star guy had a bad day, but I've golfed at Grizzly about 8 times and have always had an excellent experience with pace, friendly staff and course conditions. The layout is a classic mountain course with a good variety of holes and vistas. It's no too tight like it's ridiculous neighbor The Dragon, but accuracy is well rewarded. The Lake House 19th hole has a great patio with Adirondack chairs and a perfect view looking over the waterfall and 18th hole, The drought this year has just slightly affected course conditions, but overall it is still the best course out of the five 18 holers in the area and at a price less than Whitehawk, is a good value for a high-end course.

I had the opportunity to play Grizzly Ranch for the second time last week. The entire course is beautifully maintained. The tees, fairways and greens are all pristine. The golf course is a good challenge but not too difficult for a 12 handicap golfer like myself. The pro shop staff was friendly and accommodating. It was a 45 minute drive from Truckee and well worth the trip. Don't miss the beautiful course.
