Yesterday we travelled to Helwig looking forward to having a post Thanksgiving lunch with our family. As we walked up with our six year old grandson, we were immediately met by a male who told us that no children were allowed! Pets were welcome but not our grandson!!! I literally had no words! But today, I’m furious! I would love to hear from the person that manages Helwig and not the rude, abrupt, unfriendly male that confronted our family.
I advise families with children to support the Plymouth kid friendly wineries ONLY! Not Helwig!!!!

Met up with family for lunch. Since we don't drink, can't comment on that, but the lunch was very good. They change the menu occasionally. We had the burger, brisket tacos and pulled pork sandwich. All very tasty. You order at the kitchen. They page you and you return to pick up your food in a take-out container. All seating is outdoors, with some areas covered. It's a great view overlooking the foothills and (on a clear day), the Sierra Nevada mountains. Overall, a nice dining experience.

My husband and I were on a wine trip and stopped here because of a white wine recommendations from another winery. What a beautiful property and tasting room. The staff was gracious and kind. They have a restaurant in the back. We did now know this and will come to eat next visit. We are still thinking of joining their club so that we can visit more often. Great stop!

The only winery in Amador where we really liked everything they poured. A lot of that had to do with Layla, who was the PERFECT rep for the winery. She listened to what we preferred, then modified our tasting menu based on that. She was beyind helpful, steering us to varietals that suited us. Thank you, Layla!! Beyond a nice tasting room, the grounds at Helwig are gorgeous, with lots of room to sit on a nice patio. Lunch (burgers for us) was also very good.

My husband, his sister and I went here yesterday for lunch. GREAT place, friendly staff and the BBQ Brisket was the best! The pavilion had beautiful view of the surrounding vineyards, valley and mountains. Would go back in a heartbeat!

They make a Sparkling Wine here that is pretty good. Good enough to buy a few bottles anyway. Their long tasting room and bar also displays their many awards from the State Fair in Sacramento and other spotlight events. We just like to go outside and look at the magnificent mountains, some miles away.

I stopped here for lunch with a couple of friends on the recommendation of the tasting room staff at another winery nearby. Was hoping to check out the wines but ran short of time and I'll have to do that on a future visit - this review is of The Kitchen only. The location of The Kitchen within the winery complex is a little tough to find at first - it's kind of tucked back a ways from the tasting room and other areas. There's a small lobby area where you place your order and then pick up your food. Since it was a cold and rainy day, the woman taking our orders offered to let us wait for our food at the table in an adjacent VIP wine-tasting space since it was not being used at the time. The menu features burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, a couple of sides, and a charcuterie platter. I got the Nashville Hot Chicken Wrap - smoked chicken with a cabbage / dill pickle blend, and Nashville aioli in a tortilla, served with fries. My two friends got a burger and a cauliflower wrap. We headed over to an adjacent building with an event space with lots of tables and large windows to eat our lunches. My chicken wrap was very tasty if a bit messy to eat, and the fries were excellent. It's a little on the pricey side but that was not unexpected, and overall I enjoyed my meal and experience there. I'd certainly consider returning for lunch the next time I'm visiting wineries in Shenandoah Valley.

This winery has a very large parking lot, and it was pretty full when we drove up, so we weren't sure how crowded it was going to be. Well, we had nothing to worry about because the back patio is very large, with a huge variety of seating options. We bought a bottle of wine and selected the Adirondack chairs near the back, which a great view of the surrounding hills. We engaged in conversation with others around us, and enjoyed our wine with some snacks we brought in. It was such a relaxing time! We spent about 90 minutes there. Best winery we found (out of the 4 we visited).

Let me start by saying that the owners of this winery have sunk a lot of money into creating an all-purpose winery and event center on the top of a hill outside of Plymouth and they are going to recoup every penny that they have invested and more. People will flock to this place on warm summer evenings for music concerts featuring Pablo Cruise and Dave Mason for example. They will be amazed by the views over the vineyards and tell their friends about the glitzy tasting room and beautiful outside patio areas and they will be right. Helwig has all of these features and more, but just as ones taste in wines is subjective, so too is ones taste in wineries and this one is not my style. My wife and I visited Helwig on a wine tasting trip to the Plymouth area at the end of June and were suitably impressed with the location and the decor etc. Our pourer Louis ( or was it Lewis? ) was very knowledgeable about the wines he was serving us. We particularly enjoyed the East Block Zinfandel and the Barbera, and took several bottles home with us. Unfortunately, as we departed I was left with the undeniable feeling that Helwig was trying to be too many different things rather than focusing on what should have been its primary goal, producing great wines. I am sure that my opinion of Helwig will not be shared by everyone who visits the winery. As the French say, "A chacon son gout!"

While we've been members of the Helwig wine club for a number of years now, we've decided to move on.
Wine here is hit and miss. The venue is totally amazing but it can't make up for average wines.
We'll check back in to see how it goes in the future but there are too many other wineries in the Amador region that outshine Helwig.
