Lighthouse in the coastal region of California, with a lot of history, especially shipwrecks, with a beautiful view for observing animals and the coast. The old Hatteras lighthouse lamp is there on display, as are other items. There is a shop on site too.

It was free to visit this lighthouse. You could walk around the grounds to get great views of the lighthouse and surrounding water. We even saw some seals on the rocks nearby. There is a small museum with artifacts, the Fresnel lens and a docent to answer your questions. The only drawback was that you cannot climb the lighthouse.

This is a venerable lighthouse, for the US anyway haha. However it is showing its age since 2001 I understand, has been closed to visitors due to falling masonry etc. I hope that they powers that be are able to restore it, as we need to preserve important historical landmarks such as this.
As one would expect for lighthouse. it is easy to see from some distance away. We were passing on the coast road and, as I suspect do many, we stopped for a short look around. There is a youth hostel in the old keepers quarters, and a small store but the main attraction is to walk to the lighthouse and in front of it, to imagine what it must be like on a story night with the waves dashing themselves agains the rocks below. There is some wreckage of a doomed ship that was recovered from said rocks that is displayed in front of the building. The information provided amusing speculates that rocks in front of a lighthouse, festooned with wreckage from a ship was not an encouraging look!
Well worth stopping for a look around. Would be nice to be able to enter the building of course, but such tours no longer operate, obviously. Such places are very atmospheric I find.

I have never been to see a light house and I have to say my gosh the landscape wow there is so much history there. There is a small art/history room with photos and than you can go behind the light house and there are benches and the most beautiful view ever. The park ranger told us the history of the lighthouse and told us about the whales that people have been seeing (we weren't so lucky) but we did see a bunch of sea lions resting on the rocks. The Park Ranger was very nice and made our visit even more memorable with all the history she told us. They also have Hostels if you want to book a room there.

Great old lighthouse being renovated, but the attached small museum is really worth seeing. The history of the lighthouse is represented great. Thanks to June who took a lot of time for us and explained everything great!

We ran into some folks at Ano Nuevo who had just been here and saw whales so we checked it out. We saw some also, which was unexpected for late April. The light house is in terrible shape but still a fun thing to see. Worth a visit if you’re in the area.

We were driving along the coastline and stopped to see this older lighthouse. It has an easy exit and entrance to the highway and a parking lot close to the parking lot. Much of the area is fenced off including the light house itself. That does not prevent you from walking the grounds. There are several items to see to include a small garden, a walkway to see the surf on the south and a set of stairs down to the beach. On our visit there was a seal asleep on the beach. It was very cool to see and made the visit very special for us. If you like lighthouses, then this is a good place for you.

Stopped at this lighthouse while traveling on the coastal highway. The views from the spot are simply breathtaking. There is small history room and visitor center as well as a hostel. Would love to stay at the hostel some time.

We stopped at Pigeon Point while driving up the CA coast. It's a little off the PCH but easy to find. Although there was some fog, the views were still great. The lighthouse isn't open for tours but the grounds are available.
My only caution is that the bathrooms are disgusting. Apparently, there's no running water so it's basically a latrine. I'd "go" somewhere else.

Lighthouses are so cool. The only bummer is that it’s so decayed we’re not allowed inside. Worth the trip, it’s only a minute off the road. Nice little visitors center.

Is it possible to take night sky photos at the location ? I am looking for nearby locations where I can see the lighthouse and where it is legal to park at night and pay minimal fees.
Written May 2, 2019
You should be able to nearby. The lighthouse repairs have been "ongoing" for some 20 years. It doesn't look like it will be fixed up any time soon. The lightkeeper house next to the lighthouse has an unsightly chain link fence that has been there forever, so pictures are best from far away.

Was there still renovation going on? Wondering if you can get in the lighthouse?
Written July 23, 2018
It doesn't look like renovations have even started; I didn't get the impression it will be fixed up for another 20 years or so (being honest here). Nothing really driving it.

Is Pigeon Point Lighthouse lit up at night? I have seen night time pictures on websites and wondered if it was lit up year round.

While the original Fresnel lens has been removed from the lighthouse and is on display for tourists, the Coast Guard installed a beacon and the lighthouse is still used by ships to navigate. So yes, the lighthouse still has a rotating light. If you want to take photos of the beacon at night, you can get some interesting effects.

hi Annie,
How can I go to pigeon from bay area? I only have Sat and Sun free time and dont drive as Im visiting california for a week.
Thanks

Unfortunately, there is no public transportation to Pigeon Point from anywhere. If you are in one of the cities on the peninsula or in South Bay, the best way to get there is probably to HWY 92 to Halfmoon Bay, and then drive south on HWY 1 for another 20 min. Pigeon Point light house is just few miles south of Pescadero State Beach.
Driving is really the best way to see the coastal highway, there will be many beautiful beaches worth stopping between Halfmoon Bay and the light house, seafood restaurants in Halfmoon Bay is awesome, and don't forget to visit Norm's Market in tiny coastal town Pescadero for their famous oven fresh and piping hot garlic artichoke bread.
