Arranged a time for the Run One program as a Christmas gift for my husband and I couldn’t have found a better gift. Family time is on the top of his list for fun things to do and he was able to take daughter and grandkids with him in the cab. They were all glowing after this. Even though having been other times, they still wanted to take in the rest of the features after the run and spent additional time looking at all the other trains.

One of my favorite things was sitting on the bench near the entrance and seeing the excitement of little ones as they came in and knew they were getting close to be able to see all the big trains. Because we did the Run One that happens right before opening it was magical to be there at the moment all these little ones were arriving.

The staff are wonderful. There is so much to see and it’s really relaxing to be able to take your time looking around and taking it all in.

Tip: We only live about 1 1/2 hrs from the museum so could be flexible with our scheduling. Still I’d suggest anyone who wants to do the Run One to book early and do a little planning and weekends are a great time to call to get information.

I took a tour group here on July 9 to see their facilities and ride their wonderful and historic equipment. Ms. Harty, the experience manager and the gift shop staff as well as the crew operators were outstanding ambassadors in showing off and operating their wonderful trains and equipment.

Unfortunately, weather in this part of the country is very hot sometimes and without any warning previously, their Chief Operating Officer very curtly and rudely informed my co-tour director that they were shutting down operations at 12:30 pm. We were leaving at 1:30 pm anyways so it didn't affect our group materially. I did her the groans of disappointment of other members of the public.

This museum needs to clearly warn their customers in advance of visits that afternoon operations could be suspended so people can plan accordingly. We originally were going to split our visit into two parts with an afternoon portion and fortunately we decided to come early and leave early.

Finally their Chief Operating Officer should not be allowed to interact with members of the public only the balance of the staff who are excellent ambassadors. His conduct is what made this "5" review a "3".

Despite the heat, my family and I had a great time! Riding the train and trolly were fun for my littles (age 5 and 2) but the sounds were too loud and scary for them. The docents/staff/volunteers are so welcoming, passionate, helpful and knowledgeable. The mini passenger cars were fun for the kids to play in then we had some lunch on their shaded picnic tables out on the grass. This museum is a gem. They need help with funding, upkeep, and renovations, but it’s such a great value for the richness of history you get. We will likely visit again in the cooler autumn weather. Before leaving, we got some great train sets in the gift shop—so much fun to put the tracks together and watch the battery-operated trains running on them.

This place is not much to look at when we got there, it was dark and there wasn't anything else going on. Once the "Show" starts, it's another story. The conductor comes out with his lantern and tells everybody to get on board. It's just incredible how he mimicks the movie. Once on board your car, which is totally decked out in festive garland and wrapped packages in the overhead storage, the magic begins. We happened to sit about a third of the way towards the front of the car, and, as far as I'm concerned that was the place to be. The characters work both ends of the car so it might not matter.
If you have a five to ten year old this is a must. My six year old granddaughter was just flying after the trip, and asked Granma if we could go again next year. My twelve year old granddaughter was pretty excited too.
We will be going back next year and make sure that you make your reservations early.

I gave my adult son a "Run One" for his birthday. He chose the Southern Pacific 3100 locomotive. Carson was an awesome teacher. My son got to drive it up and back 3 times before he insisted I try it. Altogether we got to drive about 8 miles in our "Run One" hour! I read once that only 1% of the World's Population can say they completed a marathon-- I wonder how many can say they drove a massive locomotive?! My daughter is already picking out her engine for her birthday next year.

My wife surprised me with a trip here on toy train swap meet day. It was hot. I rode the trains, the little L.A. trolley from 1921 was my favorite. All the buildings were closed unless a docent was there and I didn't see a docent. Probably more interesting during special events. The steam engine runs every third weekend from October to May.

Ok, while you might balk at the cost of driving a train, it was an amazing experience, not only for our nephew, but for the 3 adults who accompanied him. Our engineer/instructor was Carson and he was fabulous. We all got to drive the train and it is an experience none of us will forget. We can't wait to take our other nephew when he visits. As our teenage nephew said, "That was pretty cool." You will want to take a lot of pictures and videos to share with friends and family. It's an experience you probably won't find anywhere else.
