Another Good Spot on Seventeen Mile Drive - Stop #5

Great spot to check out the surf and also catch a golfer or two. The spot originally had a colorful chap that lived here in a driftwood shack. Now, of course, it's all high class. The 14th hole of the Dunes Course of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club is just off to the left and it's a par three that offers some entertainment - right on the ocean.

Rocky shore caused several shipwrecks in history here

Point Joe is the 5th point on 17-Mile Drive. Its coastline is made of Granite rocks formed 65 million years back and it gives this coastline a rugged look. The place had several shipwrecks in history due to its rocky shares and its location near to Monterey Bay. The place has ample parking and sitting benches to relax. There are several information boards to read about the place. About the origin of the name Point Joe, there is debate over that for years now. Some historians believe that there was a Chinese man who lived in a driftwood structure here in the early 1900's that sold goods to explorers. It is unclear whether Point Joe was named for the Chinese man or if the man was named after the location.

Lame golf people yelling at tourists

This is private property. And the golf course people like to come yell at tourists. Kind of lame IMO. Drive a few more yards to the next stop. It’s just as pretty and you can walk around.

Good Spot for Golfers

Nice scenic spot

The views are great. There were golfers playing golf not far away from us. In the early 1900s, a man named Joe lived here selling trinkets to tourist. So the spot is named after Joe, but it’s debatable that Joe named himself after the spot instead. Anyway, the most important thing is to fully enjoy all these beautiful scenic views.

Rocky Point with Multiple Views

Point Joe is a large rocky outcropping that is stop #5 on 17-Mile Drive that resembles the entrance to Monterey Bay from the sea which led to many shipwrecks. Named for an old man that once lived here in a driftwood hit and sold trinkets to tourists, we found this to be an interesting stop for its many views; large rocks that serve as a perch for seabirds, views of the restless sea with a trial leading to the water’s edge, and a close look at the Pebble Beach golf course including a tee box nestled between the rocks in front of the parking area and the ocean where one may witness golfers teeing-off.

Must See Spot on 17 Mile Drive

This is a craggy rock point about a third of the way along the drive. You can park here and walk to the edge for some truly spectacular ocean views. Not to be missed.
