About
Clos Solène is a small, family-owned winery, in the heart of Willow Creek in Paso Robles, California. Guillaume, our 6th generation winemaker, as well as our owner and farmer, was born in Languedoc-Roussillon, a region in the South of France. Winemaking is running in the family's DNA, and it was no different for Guillaume. His parents had an estate in the Languedoc-Roussillon, but sold it after Guillaume graduated, and moved to Bordeaux where they had another estate. This is in Bordeaux that Guillaume had a bolt of lightning for the love of his life, Solène. But, not convinced to want to make his wine in Bordeaux, he flew to California in 2004 and took an internship at L'Aventure, in Paso Robles. Once again he fell in love, but with the country and its wine. Convinced by their love and Guillaume's passion, Solène followed him, and this latter created a vineyard after his muse and inspiration.

I got to go here in 2017, just after the property was purchased, and enjoy the delicious wines with the winemaker. Knowing I was getting to go back, I had only the highest expectations. Not only were we seated at a table in the shade with special misters, but our flight list had been personalized to include our names. Ryan, our wine guide/expert, sat with us and told us the history or the wine maker, the winery, and Paso in general. Overall the experience is not to be matched and the exclusivity of the wines forced me to join the wine club. (I was not upset about it). Cannot wait to get a taste of the best in Paso 2x a year.

First and finest stop on our wine tour. In looking at the winery before visiting, I thought the background story was very interesting, but my interest was not piqued by the wines/grapes that the winemaker had chosen.

This is a lesson in humility and the importance in keeping an open mind (or pallet). Guillaume and Solene are making beautiful, artfully crafted wines. Everything we tasted was brilliant.

This was the highlight of our Paso trip, joined their wine club and look forward to our next visit.

My wife an I looked forward to visiting a highly rated winery while in Paso Robles. Requiring an appointment to taste, we made and confirmed the date and time at Clos Solene and did our very best to arrive at their small facility in Tin City. OK, we were 5 minutes late but the staffer said no problem as she finished up with another couple who was just leaving. Another couple had just arrived to pick up their club member allocation on their way through town (no appointment required, obviously). The server began bouncing between us and the club members, giving us a very short explanation to each wine she poured. I expected the couple to be given their wine quickly and sent on their way, but no! The man expanded every minute by waxing eloquently about each bottle of the allocation and offering a multitude of additional details about them to us and the server. When the server mentioned another new release varietal, he had, of course, the option to taste it for free (which he did!). We are also wine club members of wineries in Virginia and California and have done the same but not with the only server in the tasting room and not if those already present had an appointment for a private tasting! This guy went on and on, commenting on the pressurized storage equipment the server was using to change the pour from one bottle to the next. When the server had trouble with the equipment and had to change the gas cylinder, that only extended his time in the tasting room as we had to wait until they were finished discussing the vicissitudes of the technologically advanced unit and its advantages over other types of gas. At that point, my wife and I had enough. The club member and his wife left and we prepared to pay for our tasting. Another young woman arrived asking if she could taste the wines and our server spoke to her to explain the appointment policy. To be fair, the wines were supposed to be hugely popular and quite expensive (although our pours lacked any perceptible 'nose' and no significant flavor at all). When the server took my credit card, we made a comment about the lack of time she spent on us and how the wine club member had monopolized OUR appointment time and tasting. She said she was so sorry over and over again. We told her that our experience would be logged on TripAdvisor and relayed our extreme disappointment. We left without purchasing any wine (of course)!

We were able to make a last minute appointment to try the wines here. What a lovely surprise. The wines definitely have a French influence reflecting the owners/winemaker origins. The former Pipestone winery is being transformed into a lovely boutique winery that in the years to come will continue to attract more attention from the wine world and consumers alike. Tasting room staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Guillaume the husband, wine maker is an amazing tallent. His wine making skills allow his wines to show off as incredibly balanced wines. Nothing overwhelms anything else. The structure and the fruit marry together in perfect harmony. I love the way he allows the acid to work so well with the fruit. I love the combination of Syrah and Viognier are combined in his Cuvée
Jean. It is so floral and yet the structure and complexity are in perfect harmony.
Judi our wonderful guide through the tasting was so informative. She even made it enjoyable fir my wife. My wife has a terrific palette. She normally sips next to nothing at tastings. She finished all the different tastes and enjoyed them all.

This was our first visit to Clos Solene and although we were pleased with the quality of their wines they did not command the extremely high price we were quoted. Their wines are only sold through the wine club and not even given a discount. There did not seem to be any incentive to join their wine club.

They were just getting the land prepped to put in more vines when we arrived. The tasting room is small but has a nice outdoor patio. We were taken through a great tasting of a diverse selection of wines and then we got a tour of the facility which is small but very interesting. We saw the cold room for holding and the warm room for fermenting. They show you how they ferment with everything in the barrel before pressing the juice out to add more depth to the wine. Morgan was very helpful and called to get us an appointment at another recommended winery. This is a true boutique winery and we joined the wait list.

This boutique winery off the beaten path in Paso Robles is a real find for those who appreciate fine wines made in the French tradition by an experienced winemaker from France. It is an intimate experience and worth the drive out to this secluded tasting room amidst the vines.

Clos Solene is hands down my favorite winery in Paso (or on the central coast, for that matter). From the incredible wines (Cuvée Juliette is how we celebrate in our household) to the lovely hospitality, everything is thoughtfully curated. The winery sits on Paso’s famous west side, and it’s not terribly far from the highway, while placing you near many other lovely wineries (in case you’re trying to visit more than one).
