At the end of our first day of wine tasting in Paso Robles on the west side, another winery that had already closed suggested we try Windward. I don't know that we would've stopped on our own, but I do know we were very pleasantly surprised!
We were able to do a small lateral tasting of 2004 & 2005 Pinot Noir - what a treat! The wine is a wonderfully soft, fruity Pinot. The tasting room also has beautiful art on the walls, and of course a friendly vineyard dog. Add this winery to your list of "must stops".

Paso Robles wasn't our destination. We were simply on our way home from our dog's first vacation.
But hey, since we were passing through, and our local wineries don't have too much in the way of Pino, it seemed like an obvious stop. And, they are dog friendly, very dog friendly, so it was meant to be.
The wines were good. Our pourer was knowledgeable, friendly, and gave us many ideas for next stops, from Port to dog parks! However, this was our only stop.
Again, they are very pet friendly. Dogs may come in the tasting room. They even have a water dish out for them.

This is the Gem of Paso Robles, not to be missed. A lateral of 06,07,08 09 and a sneak preview of the 2010 that was bottled a month ago. What a treat. The owners Maggie and Marc with the staff were perfect hosts and their passion to winemaking shows straight through to the finished product.

This was by far our favorite Pinot Noir winery. Every Pinot we tasted was excellent and everything is estate grown on their 15 acres.

Windward winery is a relatively small, family-owned winery that focuses exclusively on Pinot Noir, and even more narrowly, on Burgundy-style Pinot Noir. They accomplish this to a large extent and a visit to the Tasting room offers you the opportunity of a vertical tasting. The small tasting room is surrounded by lovely gardens, with lavender taking a prominent place.

They ONLY grow Pinot Noir grapes. These are the very best Pinot Noir wines we have ever tasted. We highly recommend that you splurge and buy one or two of their Library offerings.

Nice small winery- has a small tasting room with bocce outside and several tables outside. The folks there were very very friendly. The owner's son was there along with another very nice woman. Very small and family oriented. Not corporate at all.
We found them because we love Pinot Noir and they are exclusively pinot- strange for this hot area, but their grapes are grown in an area with wind from the ocean so it's a bit cooler.
Only critique is that it would be nice to have some tables inside-- we were there on a rainy day when we couldn't sit at the tables outside. But, it's a minor nit in an otherwise great place to stop.

Windward specializes in Pinot Noir. We have found consistent high quality during our visits -- for nearly twenty years. If you like Pinot Noir this will become one of your favorite wineries. The staff are helpful and friendly. Because it is a bit isolated, you do not find the huge crowds -- a visit is a pleasant relaxing experience.

Family-run winery, beautiful grounds (perfect for a picnic!) and a lovely tasting room. They only produce Pinot Noir, so it's fascinating to do a vertical tasting of Pinots from 6 years in a row!
