I appreciate the moments in life where I am just flat lucky and this was one. Our calendar lined up with being able to book a barrel tasting with Curtis, the winemaker. Curtis was not only knowledgeable, he was a delightful entertaining guide through the facility and vision of the wines he was making. He was relaxed and unrushed in answering our questions and introducing us to considerations we had never considered and introducing us to parts of the winemaking process we had not experienced before. We got to meet Kumar, a man who is living his passion with a joy that some of us cubicle zombies find inspire a bit of jealousy. But everyone there was engaged and interested in the collaborative project they were part of.

The wines were a spectrum. In general, they were great better than most we have had in Paso. My gut feel is to advise that you try their names wines (equivalent to reserves at some places). They were really good wines.

Fair warning: the parking lot isn't big and I can see where it fills up, especially if they are doing one of their lives music events. So, plan and be aware. Oh, and like any winery worth it, there are winery dogs.

Glad we stopped and were able to meet the folks here. Hope you can experience the same.

Back to Shale Oak for a visit. We hadn’t been in a couple of years but things haven’t changed—they are still awesome. The winery itself is an architectural gem with stained glass and concrete. Everything is sustainably designed. The wines are amazing and the host staff is great. Definitely our go to place in Paso. And let’s not forget about Cooper, the winery dog. He’s pretty awesome as well.

Upon arrival we didn't get a nice warm welcome but decided to stay and glad we did. They have a wonderful patio with tables and live music 1 to 4 pm on most days. We did the wine tasting outside and the customer service was much better. They have a nice selection of many different wines to choose from. Its $15.00 for a tasting and they will put that towards any bottle of wine. The grounds are amazing and the stain glass is so beautiful. You can bring you own food in as they dont have food to purchase.

We stayed at the outdoor patio and brought some snack that we had in the car and bought a few glasses of wine. The live music was really nice as well.

Can't wait to go back.

We visit Paso area regularly but somehow never knew about this winery all these years. It is a bit hidden away and hard to spot. Very happy to finally discover it !... It is an eco-friendly winery.. modern looking wine tasting room that is dog friendly. You will see a large friendly dog in the tasting room most of the weekdays. We love any winery that is dog friendly but this place also has good wines / value. !00% Petit Verdot was excellent value. The tasting room staff was very friendly.. We will return for sure.

We always stop at Shale Oak on any trip to Paso Robles. It's so convenient and not as overwhelming and commercial as some of the other huge wineries. The ladies behind the counter helping you are wonderful and definitely happy that you are there to visit their winery.

There are two outside eating areas, frontside and backside, and you can arrange to have food delivered to the winery if you want to enjoy lunch on the premises while enjoying a few bottles of the Shale Oak wines. We had Red Scooter Deli in Paso drop off sandwiches, both hot and cold, to us for lunch--drop off charge $15. The sandwiches were great as well as the salads.

Overall, a great way to spend lunch in Paso.

I love this winery. The wines are exceptional and have a great price point. The architectural design is phenomenal. Everything is sustainable and repurposed. And they have a darling retriever, Cooper, who is super friendly and fun. No trip to Paso would be complete without a stop at this awesome winery!

Happened upon this winery and decided to try it. What a find. The Ka and Ku wines are a delight. The people make you feel like you have been there many times and this "green, sustainable" winery has the aura of a Frank Lloyd Wright designed classic.

You won't be disappointed

I know that wine goes great with chocolate, but to strategically pair wine with a variety of brownies was just delightful. Be sure to schedule this in advance and allow for extra time to indulge. So fun!
