Mar 2019
This review is for our March 2019 visit (yes a bit late). We visited during Zinfandel weekend. Unfortunately, J. Lohr, one of the top 30 wine producers in the US with over 1 MILLION cases of wine sold annually has decided to start charging for tastings. They also changed their membership wine selections and the minimum purchase for a free tasting (at the time) was $75! This reeks of J. Lohr hiring a bean counter who knows little about the wine industry.
I like some of their wines, and 2019 was definitely the year of (drinking) Petite Sarah (in my humble opinion), but when one of the largest wine producers in the US starts changing policies.. for the worse, people take notice. Lots of wine club members have canceled their memberships, and I don't blame them. Even though we didn't pay for tastings as a family member is a wine club member, it just didn't feel the same as past visits.
If J. Lohr is going to continue down this path, the very least they could do is level the current tasting room in Paso and build something worthy of their family name. Several dozens of much smaller wineries have far more beautiful facilities, with amazing views.

My wife and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary so we decided to go and visit Paso Robles wine country. We made reservations ahead of time. Upon arrival the lady that greeted us was very nice a pleasant. Our wine guide was Tim, and we must say Tim was the best, very knowledgeable and informative on all the wines. We never felt rushed to leave the place. From all the vineyards we visited in Paso Robles this one had the best wines and staff to our liking.

Something of a surprise. J Lohr is known mostly for mass produced decent wines. The winery and tasting room in Paso Robels focuses on small lots and unusual varietals - the wines are produced in 6-10 barrels per blend/varietal only. Very good wines. The tasting room is relatively new and set among the vineyards though east of Paso Robles in a flat area so not particularly scenic.

Make sure you make a reservation. We almost didn't get in but the weather was cold and overcast (make sure you dress accordingly). Not a warm and fuzzy winery and the gentleman who waited on us was not the most enthusiastic person and only seemed to be doing a job. Saw J. Lohr at KQED function in San Francisco, so I was looking forward to this visit. There are too many wineries in the area that I will defer this one. Wine was okay.

I was totally blind-sighted as Lohr was closed, being remodeled. I asked a worker if there were any Lohr personnel there but he said there were none.
It appears that the whole right front side is being torn out and otherwise remodeled. The grass in that section is gone but there are new walkway strips installed for the new cement that will obviously be coming.
My suggestion is to call ahead so that you are not as disappointed as us.

We rejoined J.Lohr wine club today. We had previously been members since 2006, but Covid caused us to take a break. We visited Paso Robles today and tasted wines with the manager Daryl, whom we had spent a lot of time with in the San Jose tasting room over the years. We felt right at home, and the wines were out of this world great. We appreciated how Daryl shared the history and blend variations of each wine. We have missed the J.Lohr family and are so grateful to be back.

We did the Cuvee Series tasting and were served by Geraldine, who was absolutely delightful and very informative. We had an excellent tasting. Geraldine gave detailed explanations of the cuvees that we tasted, as well, as the history of the grapes in the cuvees, the winery and the Paso Robles area. It was a great way to start a wine tasting visit to the Paso Robles area.

J. Lohr Wines are a consistent well balanced winery. The mass production and size of the company is brought down with the simplicity of the aesthetics of the tasting room. The wine selection was quite nice in the flight. We bought 5 bottles with a deference to the reds, primarily Cabernet, 2015 and 2017. Plus the Pure Paso Proprietary Red because it's nice to get something that is said to be exclusive, hopefully it truly is exclusive.

My daughters bought me a virtual tasting of J. Lohr wines. They shipped four bottle and instructions on how to sign up. I invited my brother, his fiancée, my Mom, myself and girlfriend. This experience was so great. Darrell Marcus was our host virtually and did a truly fantastic job. Totally enjoyed our time. He was informative, fun and a great host. As a former J. Lohr wine member as (my middle daughter went to Cal Poly SLO), I already was familiar with the Brand. But Darrell was very insightful and great time with new details and info. Great times.

Our favorite wine! Forget what you get in the store and try their reserve & legacy wines. Tasting was enjoyable with generous tastings. Cheese board was better than most places. Staff was friendly. My husband got the legacy tasting and loved almost every red wine he tried. Brought home several reserve bottles.

You should not have a problem with the stroller. It is a flat parking lot and entrance into the facility. There seemed to be enough room inside to move around without feeling crowed. I think you will be fine. Have fun.
