This hike offers terrific views of the valley and a great sense of accomplishment. The guidebooks say it is "moderately-challenging"4.4 miles, but it is very hilly, and you should take it clockwise. As this was our first time, we accidentally went counter-clockwise, so we had a very slow ascent that finished with a very rapid and challenging descent. Frankly, it isn't for the faint of heart.
Bring water with you, and make sure you have caked on the sunscreen in advance. The hike is probably too challenging for young children. The early ascent (if you properly walk clockwise) may be too difficult for some walkers.

We hit this trail on recommendation by a friend. The trailhead is shared with another trail so signage isn't clear at beginning. Veer left for some awesome terrain that will get your heart rate up quickly. In my opinion, it would be cumbersome to descend down that stretch of trail, so I was glad to climb up instead. We started at 8AM and definitely noticed the numbers of hikers increasing within 45 minutes. At a brisk, steady pace you can finish this trail in roughly an hour. While you can hear some activity in the shopping area below the mountain, we enjoyed the convenience of heading five minutes to breakfast afterward!

It took us 2 hours 15 minutes to complete the trail loop. We hiked counterclockwise and if I hiked it again, I would go clockwise. The ending part of the trail coming down was quite treacherous. I should have heeded the advice of others in the reviews that said go clockwise. It is a 4 mile hike and my legs were fatigued. We went early in the morning on a weekday and that was a good time to hike. If you love hiking, this trail is a feat of accomplishment!

This climb is well used by climbers from the valley as it is centrally located and within the city .We are not experienced climbers so did the west trail up and over a greenhouse and eventually a very scenic golf course. Many people on the trail. at times but gives us newbies some security but the longer trails are more difficult and therefore for all levels of hikers. Some report seeing big horned sheep but the route they are most commonly found on is closed for Feb. for mating season. The initial slope is steep but then it is more gradual and easier but still gives you a workout and some great views of the Central Valley

We went for the mountains.
I had never seen so many people hiking. We walked up to mountains.
There were rocks and some boulders,
The best of it all we could see everything : Mountains, plants and flowers, the city and way more.
We had our exercises!

This is an excellent trail with tremendous views of the surrounding mountain ranges. We saw a herd of Bighorn Sheep, which was amazing! Reasonably challenging, but not too strenuous- going to the right at first is a more gradual ascent and steep descent. Seems like more people start going to the left, but we went right - pick your poison. Good workout, excellent bang for the buck!

We were looking for a Palm Desert hike that we could complete in a few hours, and the Bump and Grind Trail seemed to fit the bill. It was near our resort, had good reviews, and was free. We parked on the road near the trailhead, located behind the Desert Crossing Shopping Center. Following signs that said Mike Schuler Trail to the lower Bump and Grind, we headed right as the left slope appeared quite steep. You can’t get lost. The trail is well-marked and well-trafficked. Overall, I found this desert hike barren (no wildflowers, no vegetation) and not very scenic until we got near the top. We did enjoy the views of Larry Ellison’s private estate and golf course Porcupine Creek, as well as beautiful Palm Desert below. A local advised that part of the trail (the left steep section) was closed Feb 1 – April 30 due to the bighorn sheep mating season. We decided to retrace our steps back and anyway, we had enough of the grind by this time. It was hot and there is no shade. Bring water. Leave the kids at home unless they are good little hikers because there are narrow sections with steep drops and slippery gravel/rocks. We did not have trekking poles, but they might come in handy for the very steep section if you come down that way.

Terrific views. It was a challenge for our 10-year-old daughter. She does not enjoy physical activity as much as the others. Once she got to the summit and the remainder was downhill, she was fine. We got there at 7:30 am in July and should have been there an hour earlier based on the temperatures.

I had never seen so many people to hike on a mountain that would take 4 miles. No cars at all!
We had some beautiful views.
We saw the city from the mountain
We even saw golf club and a nursery for flowers and plants. Wow!
Everybody were friendly.
I also enjoyed the mountains nearby. Beautiful. One of the mountains had ice.
This is a must see.
P.S. Take the left to start your trek. You will not have problems with gravel. It is very slippery.
Otherwise we had a great time, even if it was a hike of 4 miles.

This hike was highly recommended by everyone I spoke with on local hikes. It’s free and there was plenty of street parking.
We were told to go early but got a late start and wound up going after lunch. It was more crowded. Word is to go left on the way out (steeper side) and come down on the right side. So that’s what we did. It got noticeably steeper about half way up so we took a break and sat for awhile. During the break we saw a number of people having a hard time getting down the mountain, mostly due to the footing. Seeing this, we decided to shorten our hike and proceed down. it was easy going down the right side from mid mountain.
Views were very enjoyable and we will go again to conquer the full hike up.

How long for an above amateur to do a full loop? Clockwise or counterclockwise?

It was suggested we hike up the right side trail as it would be the least difficult, but I just read a review that said " the right side is more narrow and difficult to navigate going down and so recommend doing the hike clockwise" ..are there multiply hikes or just one circular? What are their distances and approximate time to do? We plan to arrive around 1:00-2:00 this afternoon.

The total distance is three miles and the hike takes over an hour to complete. I always go clockwise as I like to get the hard stuff over first. It is a circular hike with the right side being steeper and shorter and the left side being longer and less steep. There is an additional hike at the top which takes an additional thirty minutes. If you have time and the hike has not worn you out I would very much recommend the top portion. It is a go up and come down the same trail hike. In the summer it can be very hot and I have seen rattlesnakes up there so just be cautious. Water is a must on this hike, especially in the hot weather.

Where is the start of the trail

Off Painters Path behind the shopping mall in Palm Desert. It's literally in the city.
Are you able to hike the trail at night?are you able to hike the trail at night?

I definitely would not recommend anyone to take this trail at night! If you start out at dusk or there's any chance you'll be there in the dark have a flaslight! One stumble over a little rock and you could get seriously injured or killed.
