I came out to California hoping to try surfing for the first time for my 40th Birthday. Found Big Surf on google. It was in the Monterey area, and the pricing was in line with what other companies were charging. I gave Zane a call and he set up a time and place on a beach where the surf conditions would be right where he could meet us in his big surf mobile. Zane was a cool guy with a legit surfer vibe. He provided everything we needed as far as boards, wetsuits and booties. We started with on beach instruction, showed us how to spot the best areas to surf, reminded us that surfing was a leasure sport and got out into the water with us. After about a half hour of falling off the board and getting pummeled by waves, I was on my feet and surfing like Laird Hamilton (almost). Zane was really chill and patient, made me want to go back and surf some more.

We were visiting the Monterey Peninsula from Los Angeles and in need of a surf instructor for my autistic son... Zane is the man! He was easy to communicate with and he was great working with my son. His patience with my son and his autism was outstanding. He was a great fit and definitely helped my son advance in his surfing ability all while continuing to build his confidence on his board. He picked up right where our local instructor left off and then some! My son felt safe in the water with Zane and caught some sweet waves on our trip. Zane accommodated us for multiple lessons during our stay. We hope to be back soon!

Alex K did an excellent job giving me tips and support during my first lesson. In less than 2 hours, I was able to catch a few waves and stand up on the board. Most importantly, I was left feeling confident that I would be able to continue improving rapidly with more practice. He also was great trying to help out my six year old son. Big surf made everything easy, meeting right at the beach with a truck full of surfboards and wetsuits of all sizes.

Went to Asilomar for a family reunion over the Christmas break.
Booked private lessons with Big Surf Adventures in the mornings for 5 days.
Equipment was really good, waves and view spectacular, wet suits really did keep us warm throughout. Instructor was experienced, helpful and highly knowledgeable.
Having dolphins jump out of the water 20 feet from your board also very cool.
Can highly recommend.

Makena was the boys’ instructor and he was extremely knowledgeable. He was very patient with them and took the time to explain the ins and outs of surfing. The boys had a wonderful time and we could not recommend this company more. This is the second time we have taken lessons with Big Surf. Both times have been outstanding but Makena really made it a special lesson. My youngest son had never surged before this and was able to get up with Makena’s instruction. My oldest had taken lessons before but learned even more with Makena. Thank you for a great day. We will be coming back.

I called on a Saturday morning and was able to get a 2hour surf lesson in the afternoon for my 2 teenagers. They had a good range of wetsuits and boards in a delivery truck by the beach. Luke talked to my kids on the beach and practiced everything before they went in the water. He stayed with them the whole time and helped them get going on the waves. My kids really like the experience and are asking to go back. Luke was friendly and helpful. Good experience all around.

Zane and co. are super great guys. I'm 36 and havent surfed in 8 years and didnt feel intimidated or anything like that, had a great time at asilomar beach in a fun lesson with one other dude. The wet suits and boards were in great shape. You can tell these dudes love what they do and are passionate about helping people become surfers. Definitely worth the $. I was taking diggers at first and riding waves again by the end of the lesson. Thanks guys!

This was definitely a highlight of my stay in Monterey. Abraham was my instructor for the morning and he was so patient and nonjudgmental! He’s a great teacher, with a laid back attitude and solid pep talks on the water. I would definitely hit these guys up again next time I’m in town.
