Our family of four was thrilled with every aspect of the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Elk wandered in many locations and we were lucky enough to view a bear and its cub. There were dozens of bird species and we had mule deer approach to within a few yards of us on one hike. All of these wonderful sightings... More

We drove to Prairie Creek Visitor Center from Trinidad, turning off from the Redwood highway onto the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. This 10 mile paved road passes through the heart of the forest along the Prairie Creek. If you go on the parkway you can access different attractions of the area from the road itself and go on small... More

We drove through the park in June and there were several elk in the fields that were roadside. I was fascinated by the moss covered trees. Looked like the bark had a fur/moss coat.

This is a sacred place for all. Don't miss Ranger Dale's story of the native people who inhabit and inhabited this area for 10,000 years. He shares his story at the camp ground.

Redwoods National Park is comprised of several State Parks, including Prairie Creek. We intended to take the Prairie Creek trail and loop back on cathedral, but a mile down prairie creek trail it became too much for our disabled cousin and we turned back. This is a flat wide trail, so don't be discouraged... Most can easily make it. The... More

I have hiked in many places before, but hiking through the redwoods at Prairie Creek was fabulous--the trail was cushiony because of plant materials on the trail, and we had the shady canopy of the majestic redwoods above us, with a peek of the radiant sky above us! Our trail was moderate, and we hiked about 6.5 miles, but it... More

The campsites are beautiful, big, private and clean. The location is surrounded by many things to do in nature.

Inside the Prairie Creek State park you find the aptly names large redwood "Big Tree", yet another state park worth parking up and exploring nature. Having your picture taken in front of the famous tree also.

Really helpful ranger Jaime put us on excellent trails. Plenty of parking, lots of great trail options from very easy walks on 1.5 mile loop to 11.5 mile hikes all the way to the beach. Lots to explore here; we ended up doing the Fern Canyon hike via a 17 minute drive up a dirt road to the ocean, fording... More

Since we did not have a lot of time in traveling south, the Visitors center in Crescent City recommended the Newton Drury Scenic Parkway and a quick stop at the Prairie Creek Visitors' Center. The scenic road was beautiful, and it takes the same amount of time as 101. We bought sandwiches before leaving Crescent City and had a lovely... More
