This is one of the longest beaches I've been to. There are so many activities available such as camping, hiking, watching the elks and of course appreciating all the driftwood, sea shells and identifying birds. The road to the beach slow going and you need...More

I definitely recommend visiting Gold Bluffs Beach. The drive there itself was such a great experience. We had a small 4 door sedan that was pretty low to the ground. The drive to the beach was no problem at all. A lot of people wrote...More

This is a difficult drive to get to, there is an entrance fee and certainly not worth it when compared to many other places to get to the beach/ocean in a much easier fashion. Go to the beach at the nearby Visitors Center south of...More

This is a beautiful beach. There is campground right on the beach where you can listen to the waves crash at night.

I only gave this 4 stars because of the miles of driving on tight (dangerous feeling) dirt roads to get there. Also, be prepared to cross a few streams. Once you get there you can easily walk the beach or go to Fern Canyon (where...More

This beach is extremely wide with very few people in sight. Watched a net fisherman bring in a shark.

The road\trail to get here is slow-going and full of big potholes but passable. Hike on to Fern Canyon and then come back to Gold Beach to enjoy the golden sand, waves and tall cliffs. Make sure to bring towels for the kids.

It’s a really nice beach with a very nice trail for hiking through Fern Canyon, where several important motion pictures were filmed including Jurassic Park: The Lost World, The Tree of Life, amongst others. It was a nice place to visit for a day trip...More

This beach is huge and picturesque. Really nice. The only drawback is the water. It's very dangerous with a strong undertoe. Do NOT go into the water.

Road trip through the Redwoods--late July (18 Replies)
My mom (50) and I (19) will be visiting Northern California as part of our month-long road trip in July. This won't be a "vacation to the Redwoods", it'll be a "stop at the Redwoods on our vacation." We'll have just spent two days at the Columbia River Gorge (focusing on waterfalls) and three days on the Oregon Coast (focusing on rock formations, tidepools, and lighthouses), and we'll be heading to Lassen Volcanic next, if that influences your suggestions. I did a little research on the...More

Trip to RedWood Park from Sacramento (5 Replies)
I will have a family trip to Redwood Park in next few days from Sacramento. Here is my "original" plan. Day1: arrive SMT at 11 (from LA), drive via fwy 80, 29, 128 and to fwy 101 ( we like to see what the "Napa-Wine Country" looks like). If possible, cruise through "Avenue of the Giant" and stay at Eurica on the first night Day2: take "tall tree grove" hike via Orick. go to Gold Bluffs Beach , Fern Cyn... and all the way noth to Crescent City , overnite stay at ????? Day 3: spend whole day in...More

It's a long way from Sacramento to Eureka, about 7 or 8 hours if you want to see the Napa Valley or the coast and the Avenue of the Giants. It can be done, but Napa Valley would be easier on the first day. Skip the Tall Trees Grove, you need to get a permit to drive there, or take the bus, and then it is a steep mile down (and back up) to the Tall Tree, and the Tall Tree is no longer even close to being the tallest redwood. It lost its top decades ago. The current tallest is in Prairie...More

James Irvine Trail (1 Reply)
Hi there, We will be visiting late September and I see that the road to Fern Canyon and to Gold Bluffs Beach will be closed during that time. I see that we can hike the James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon, but am wondering how long to budget for that hike? We are in our mid 30s and in good shape, but also do not plan to rush.
