Helgrens was amazing! First things first! A successful fishing trip has so many factors to consider, weather, water, the time of year, quality of bait, of course the fish and angler too! On this day we were very successful and came home with a full sack of great quality fish.
My angling experience is different than my customer experience. In the last 2 months I have fished from 3 landings, 4 different times all on 5 hour trips. Far and away Helgrens hit it out of the park over the other two landings I visited. The skipper and crew absolutely made the difference for what was a great 1/2 day trip on the water. As much as I can say these guys were very experienced, very helpful and very friendly.
I have been fishing on Southern California sportfishing boats for over 40 years. From San Pedro to San Diego. The crew of the Electra were phenomenal. The entire crew took care of their guest regardless of the Angler's experience. The crew wanted the Rental Rods putting fish on the deck as much as the $600 rods.
If you have never had the pleasure of fishing the ocean from a sportfishing boat before and this is your first time considering a trip, try Helgrens. If you are anywhere in So.Cal. and like to fish a quick 1/2 day regularly at a favorite landing, try Helgrens! Pricing was very competitive for boarding and for services (food, sack, fish cleaning) on the boat. Parking was free and easily accessible. The boat Crew and Helgren's Staff were friendly and helpful from check-in at the kiosk to getting off the boat at the end of the day. If you are in LA or OC I can't stress it enough, try Helgrens it is worth the 10 or 15 extra minute drive! Thank you Electra and Helgrens for a great day of fishing! We will see you back on the water very soon!

The staff running the office were professional, super nice, and kept everyone informed and on track. The deck hands were super awesome! The two deck hands scrambled to make sure everyone had bait, rigs were tied, and taking the fish off and putting them in the proper bag. Couldn’t ask for better deck hands. The reason I gave them 3 stars is because Helgrens is average when compared to all the other cattle boat fish types. Maybe put too many people on the boat also. Seemed like the deck hands spent a lot of time untangling lines and there wasn’t enough room to really cast efficiently. If you want to go out on a cattle boat and don’t mind the crowds then you can’t go wrong with Helgrens.

We had a fantastic time on our 3/4 day fishing trip! I went with three friends from work, one of whom had never fished, two who had not been fishing in years. From the time we checked in at the Kiosk to the time we left, everyone was so kind and helpful. This charter is very fairly priced, which is why we initially chose it. I was looking to get one good fishing trip in while I was on the pacific ocean, and my friends were looking to get an intro to fishing. Each of us, with our varying degrees of experience, had a great time. I loved how many locals were fishing on the boat, and how many people knew each other. One of the captains, Chris, helped us a lot and talked with us throughout the day, sharing stories and giving us advice about our field. It felt like we were friends with those on the boat around us. The fishing was great, the food in the galley was great, and everyone was so nice. VERY military friendly.

We went on the O95 day and half trip,The reason for the 1 star is on the website it says blanket and pillow will be provided, you better bring your own, they don't supply, also mentions meals included, bring money for food if u want to eat or bring your own snack food,I booked my trip rented a rod a reel on the Helgrens website for $18 but they will come to you and tell u that if u want to rent it's going to be another $20, they also failed to mention where we going to fish we went to Mexico but if you want to fish u have to pay another fee I think $17 unless you have a Mexican permit already, they also say they are practicing social distancing and all the blah blah with it but still carry 30 people plus crew and all fish one side of the boat (be friendly with the crew you will see them a lot with all the tangled lines) put 9 people in per room, don't get me wrong the deck hands are very friendly and great at what they do they would get 5 star. This trip was way over priced for what you got out of it, the captain also got over the PA and mentioned we were getting low on bait, and careful how much is used shortly later a boat pulls up and the captain has his crew give that boat bait. (I known mind blowning right 🤯)

We had asked prior to booking if there was shade and seating and were told yes but after boarding we found almost no seating and people we’re looking for shade! Granted it was a sunnier and warmer than normal day but….

The staff were cold and not very friendly and offered no help. They acted as we should know what to do. When they did call everyone together we could not hear instructions.

Time wasted…we waited for late people…the boat stopped for live bait pickup which in my opinion should have been done prior to our boarding.

We never went more than 100-200 meters offshore! I felt like I could have done this type of fishing in a kayak!

You were told once you were on the boat you had to purchase a bag to put your fish in (even if you didn’t catch any). Nickel, dime…

So here are the facts from our experience-you decide from here.

Didn't want to write this review and waited more than a week in the hopes Helgren's would do the right thing. They did not and here I am. Simply put Helgren's on at least one occasion that I know of personally did not report poor fish counts. There were about 30 of us on the Oceanside 95 from Aug. 25-27. On that 1.5 day trip we landed three fish that I know of and certainly not many more that that. Yet Helgren's saw fit not to list that fish count. Who knows how many times they've done this before. When the fish counts are good, they post. When they are not, they don't. I don't expect to catch fish every time out. But what I do expect is honesty and integrity. While Helgren's boats are cheaper and easier to land a spot on than San Diego-based fishing boats, I do not know if they're worth it.

The trip was ok. We did depart on time. The crew was helpful. I was a little disappointed with the captain. We only were about 2-3 miles from shore. It would have been nice to have gone into deeper waters. Also, it seems like they were only fishing for Vemilion rock fish. At first we were getting not hits on our bait and we went from 150ft to 590ft. Reeling in thst much line with a 1lb weight gets tiring even after the first time. Unfortunately, there were other people from other groups who were smoking and drinking as early as 7am. Overall the catch was minimal. Several on my group did not catch anything. Also, the re tal rods kept getting g tangle on people because it require you to put “your thumb” on it to keep the line tangling up. Overall the experience was “Ok”. The price did not justify the experience let alone the catch for me. My family and probably will not be returning to them since I had better experiences in other places.

Would NEVER recommend them. Had out of town friends that wanted to go fishing, made a reservation and just to be safe I called that morning and I was told they did not have enough people so they canceled that day. now forward to the next week, called and made a reservation again was told they had enough people so all was well, if there was a problem they would contact us. The morning of the trip I called and left a message asking them to call me if there wee any issues, DID NOT get a return call, baked up the family and got there to be told the trip was canceled, I asked why they did not return my call and the response is "there is nothing we can do now" The phone sitting right next to her had the message light blinking! They just don't care. Would never use them again.

Captain Rick Slavin of the 095 did such a fantastic job he and his crew and guided us and directed us into catching some very big trophy size blue fin tuna. The boat is very large and very comfortable with the bedrooms and state rooms very well air conditioned. Large galley. Large deck outside to store all of your tackle needs and also tables in would you can relax 1. I will be chartering this boat many times in the future.

Fun experience for the family. We did a half day and wish we'd gone longer. The crew is attentive and speedy to help with every detail. They power on if the fish aren't biting until they find the right spot. The fish are colorful, the competition is fierce and everyone is smiling. The waft of cooking bacon from the galley only enhances the experience! We had a bonus of watching a pod of dolphins chase the boat. The fare is very affordable in comparison to other venues.
Highly recommend.
