We swung by on our way back to Napa from St Helena, trying to fit in a wine tasting on a busy Saturday afternoon in the valley. This stop really has it all, with an awesome specialty food market, deli, coffee shop, wood fired pizza and tons of comfortable outdoor seating and a cornhole area. The property is beautifully maintained and welcoming. The grocery store is on the same site as the 1881 Napa Wine History Museum and Tasting, which is a must-visit!Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 13, 2023
- BuenViaje68Tempe, Arizona559 contributionsGreat roadside store for nosh on your journey between wineries! This is a delightful little store just off the highway passing through Oakville. It’s filled with anything you’d like to snack on while sightseeing and visiting wineries in the area. They sell soda, beer, wine, coffee for a variety of beverage choices. They also have tons of cheeses, meats, and other goodies to supply a great picnic…even premade sandwiches and snacks. I think you can even buy a stamp card and sample tons of different wines from around the region. Great place to stop and shop for some nice goodies to fuel you until you get to your next spot. Prices are a bit high, but you’re paying extra for the convenience and location just off the highway.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 10, 2023

This a was recent weekday lunch stop, and while the food was good, I found it to be confusing and crowded.
I thoroughly enjoyed my wood fire grilled pizza--wild mushroom with caramelized onions. When we placed our order, we were told it would take 20 to 40 minutes, and our wait was definitely closer to 40 minutes. Those in our group who ordered sandwiches had a much shorter wait of about 10 minutes.
Luckily, one of our party had been there numerous times before and walked us through the ordering and paying processes. I'm not sure I would have been able to stand the cramped space long enough to figure it out on my own.

Visiting Oakville Grocery for lunch feels like stepping into a John Steinbeck novel. A vintage style building houses amazing hot or cold sandwich options, Wood-fired pizza and a huge selection of local wines. The outside patio provides a perfect place to enjoy your meal while looking out over acres of vineyards on either side of the road. Any visit to Napa must include a stop at Oakville Grocery.

This is the oldest, continuous grocery in Napa and one of the oldest in California. It is a small, quaint grocery that harkens back to retail and grocery of 70-90 years ago. While small, it is amazing the amount and diversity of product that is has. However, nearly every inch of this grocery is dedicated to wine and those foods, meats and cheeses especially, and products that go with it. After a morning walk and one winery stop, we bought a few items meats, cheese, chocolates and bread to go with the wine were we enjoying on our bus.
In addition to wine, there were a couple of guys in our group that really enjoyed the beer they had on top as well. Finally, the grocery is in a perfect setting on the main road, CA-29, and the weather was great for sitting outside to enjoy our purchases.

We had heard good things about Oakville Grocery, so we stopped in to get a glass of wine and sandwiches on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
First let me say if you are just shopping the market, they have some great gourmet items. Now for the food. The line was long, but we waited. Mr. Bee and I ordered our sandwiches and I ordered a glass of wine. We were overcharged by $2.00 for the wine, not going to break us, it is the principle. It was priced at $12, they charged $14. When we brought it up, there was no apology, just oh, okay. We left the sandwich line, and then got in line to pay and pickup which took forever. The line to pay was the same line for those just buying gourmet grocery items. Then it was another 20 minutes before the sandwiches were up. The employees acted as though we were a bother.
We found a table outside on the patio, and unwrapped our sandwiches. The sandwiches were okay, but the bread was the type of sourdough roll that is so hard, you have trouble biting through. The quality wasn't great and it looked like they were thrown together. Very disappointed.
There are so many great places in Napa Valley, and we wanted to love this one, but we just didn't.

This is a Beautifully laid out, built deli/grocery store that is right on Rt29, the main route that takes you through wine country from Napa to Calistoga.
It's an interesting concept, as they have some amazing salads, sandwiches, charcuterie-related cheeses and meats, etc to help someone build a picnic or buy assembled food to enjoy there or on a picnic. They also have a huge outdoor pizza brick oven and there's even a wine tasting room next door, which offers many exclusives, including Screaming Eagle at times!
They have a nicely done wine selection with something for everyone and lots of tourist-related items, gifts, etc.
My only issue is that everything is wayyy over-priced! They really need to reduce their prices by about 10%, they'd still be profitable and would probably sell more! Bonus!!

We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday. We waited in line for about 20 to 30 minutes before we could place our order. If possible order sandwiches for pick up! Recommendation: Have one person reserve a table while another person in your party waits in line. They only allow a few people in the store at a time because of Covid. We ordered the chicken gruyere toasted sandwich it was delicious! The sandwiches are pretty large so you can share them. It was really hot the day when we were there and it was hard to get a table in the shade because it was so crowded. There are some really nice shaded tables by the back parking lot. This grocery store is a perfect lunch spot because it is so near many wineries!

We stopped in here mid-morning on our way to a wine tasting in Saint Helena. We always stop here when we are in the area. But we didn't buy anything because they no longer had the sausage we use to buy and they wanted $11.00 for a pack of crackers, plus their bread shipment had not arrived yet. One of the employees did offer us a sample of another sausage, but it was too spicy for our taste. Because of our wine tasting reservation we could wait for the bread shipment to arrive.

This country store established in 1881 is the perfect breakfast or lunch stop when visiting wineries on CA-29 near St. Helena, Yountville, Oakville, or Rutherford. We couldn’t believe the gourmet selection of food, deli items, pizza, beer, and wine for such a small place! Lovely outdoor patio for dining. Oakville Grocery is a local favorite (I could become obsessed with the place if I lived nearby) so expect it to be busy during peak times. We arrived for lunch around 11:30 am, luckily found a parking space, and beat the crowd. The next day we drove past at 1 pm when we saw a line out the door. Service is fast and friendly but allow adequate time if you are visiting between wineries.

I have been to Oakville Grocery many many times over the years and had not been in a few years. Our group of friends went over the holidays and it was nuts! The place was jam packed with people and all of the seating both inside and outside was full (we did get a table before our food was ready). The sandwiches and salads were as good as ever though.
