The EAMES special exhibit was well-done and the California history was accurate in it's historic content and well documented. A real treat! It's also a great kids learning experience.

It’s actually several museums in one covering California history, fossils and art plus a nice garden. Allow plenty of time, there’s lots to see with many interactive exhibits for kids and adults, easy to spend several hours if not all day there. We liked that...More

This excellent museum has some really good displays on the history of California and Oakland but don't go on a wet Sunday like we did as we were visiting Oakland. The queue to get in was nearly out of the building! It was also the...More

Went to see the Ray and Charles Eames exhibit and was just so pleased to have such a gem in our backyard. The staff is very pleasant, the setting inviting and the exhibit was also very inspirational.

Beginning with the original peoples of these lands, their daily life with tools, food provisions, clothing and canoeing is well presented. Next came the Spanish with their Conquistadors and Christianity. This epochal event changed everything and signaled the demise of the natives. Allure of wealth...More

We came for the Charles & Ray Eames exhibit and found it to be comprehensive and interesting. We didn't expect as much film but were pleasantly surprised to see their work beyond furniture.

This is a wonderful museum worthy of a visit if you happen to be traveling anywhere near by. On Friday nights they have live music and food trucks outside and half price admission.

The Lake Merritt BART station is only a couple blocks from the Oakland Museum. When you exit the BART station head towards the hills and you are walking in the right direction.

What about Oaktown (8 Replies)
I know several hotels in downtown Oakland close to BART (absent another strike) and therefore the City. The Oakland Museum of California is excellent. There are multiple excellent places to dine. There is for most of the hotels downtown proximity to Oakland's Chinatown and its does have its merits being less touristy than San Francisco's. But few on the California forum suggest it to budget travelers. Maybe Rockridge rather than downtown for those who are not prepared for an inner city...More

What is your point? San Jose has a lot more to offer than downtown Oakland; and by the way the 49ers play in Santa Clara (right next door to San Jose) at a stellar stadium unlike Oakland's. So yeah - if you are a tourist in Oakland - figure out first what you want to do in downtown Oakland. There is not much to do there. The Oakland A and raider stadium is in a not so good area - and the motels there look like they have had better days long ago. it is very easy to take bart from San...More
