Beautiful modern architecture. One of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. It's located directly across from Lake Merritt, which is in the center of the city. It is a tourist "must see."

My only experience of the Cathedral was while attending a deeply moving performance of Mozart's Requiem by members of the Oakland Symphony Choir on September 11th a few years ago. To my untutored ear, the acoustics seemed superb, and the sanctuary space was uplifting and impressive, yet austere. The contribution of this monumental edifice to the lakeside skyline seems to... I walked over here while exploring the area, and this place has a nice ambiance. There are multiple places to sit, relax, and absorb the ambiance.

One of the most amazing modern churches I have visited in a very very long time. Don't miss!!! The way they captured the light coming into the cathedral is spectacular and the altar is otherworldly.

Innovative architecture that must be seen from the interior as well as the exterior -- and the effects varies by time of day. Large contemporary sanctuary, with several small and intimate rooms for prayer and reflection. Nearby Catholic bookstore is worth a visit, and the lattes at City Lights Cafe are the best -- as are the soups and lunch... More

Too modern for a Catholic Church in my opinion. I was expecting something more historical to represent the city however it is an unusual design, sharp lines and it gets your attention from the lake.

A fascinating and beautiful cathedral to see even if one is not religious. We attended a mass there with family members who are practicing Catholics. The acoustics of the place are wonderful!

I like praising community contributions. Alas, this one is a grand disappointment. Rather than relating in a welcoming way with the community and with the surround, it's street level is a formless concrete wall with few openings, none elegant or interesting. It does nothing to relate to the park quality of Lake Merritt, which one could (and does) consider the... More

A very different type of Catholic Church. This new style is most unusual and sitting in the back one sees the face of Jesus through thousands of holes in the rear wall. With a partly cloud day showing dark and light it appears Jesus is viewing each person in the room. A bit un-nerving to the young and very old... More
