This lake is pretty big, so it'll take some time to walk around it. I biked it. The best spot (and perhaps the area that you should check out first) is the bird sanctuary. It's a part of the lake that has built in binoculars on the lake shore looking out to an island that is home to a number... More

Lake Merritt is a huge lake right on the outskirts of downtown Oakland. I think it's approximately 8 miles to drive, bike or walk around. Lots of restaurants on the Grand Avenue side. Some still fish there. Lots of greenbelt areas for pick-up football or soccer games as well. Southwest side has a couple putting greens. Pretty cool place.

Three-mile circle walk along the lake offers a delightful way to enjoy downtown Oakland and escape the hectic pace of the city. Didactic panels show you where you are and show where water flowing into the lake comes from. Some nice places where birds come to perch.

Our family lives in a neighborhood next to Lake Merritt. We are regularly enchanted by what's happening around the Lake. A walk around Lake Merritt, which borders on several Oakland neighborhoods, gives both visitors and locals insight into the vibrancy and beauty of Oakland. The Lake draws residents and workers from Uptown, Adams Point, GrandLake, Lakeside, Eastlake and back around... More

If you are ever in Oakland, be sure to have a walk around Lake Merritt. The views of the hills, reflections on the water and many birds make this a very peaceful place to spend time. I go there at least once a week for a quiet lunch. There are always many people walking dogs, running and strolling along. There... More

Lake Merritt has come a long way! I remember when I first moved to the area 14 years ago, there were run down paths. Now, it is a big source of pride for locals to showcase the newly paved paths and a mini- arena near the courthouse. The aviary, botanical garden, boat house, gazebo, and Fairy Land remain as before.... More

We spent the afternoon in Oakland, and decided to visit Lake Merritt. The 3.5 mile path around the lake took over an hour to complete. Along the way, we stopped at the botanical garden, which featured bonsai trees. There were many people gathered around the lake, having picnics, laying on blankets, and listening to musicians. The weather was beautiful, and... More

I recently stayed near there and found it comforting. I love all bodies of water that don't stink. Although I was only walking from my accommodations to an event, I really enjoyed the view.
