I go to this saltwater lake on weekends when I want to be in nature, but in the midst of a hugely diverse group of interesting people. Jogging, speed walking, biking, casual walking. Multi-ethnic. Exciting. Restful. Music. Dancing. Drumming. Hanging out. Eating. Excitement or relaxation... Come to the Lake!

It was a night time after visiting the restaurant located in front of the lake. The restaurant has tables outside so you can stop, have a beer and hors-d'oeuvres and also find the happy hours as they have free appetizers.

Lots of bird poop and beware of the runners if walking, not enough room from everyone. Its a nice lengthy path if you can handle it.

Lake Merritt is the centre of Oakland outdoor life. As long as there is daylight there are walkers, cyclists, and picnickers. In summer, it is a glorious place to explore.

I live nearby and love coming down here to relax. There are jogging and biking paths all around the lake. I've explored most of the gardens in the park, and they're nice. I must if you visit of stay in the area.

Just love running around Lake Merritt. There is a sidewalk and softer path if needed all the way the 5K circle. Picnics, playing children, yoga acrobats, dancers and even a old water fall with steep steps to break any monotony. The lake itself is beautiful and easy to see the gondolas and rowers enjoying the water.

Wow. I had not been to Lake Merritt in many years. At that time it just was not a place to hang out. But oh my goodness that has changed. Picnicers, spontaneous music and people strolling the lake. Just as it was meant to be. We will be there on the next nice day enjoying the sun and people watching.... More

Born & raised in Oakland. Lake Merritt has often taken a back seat to other sights in the Oakland area but over the course of the last decade this attraction has stepped out of the shadows and has become a star unto herself. The old time street lights that encircle the lake have been restored, the lake has been opened... More
