About
We focus on single-vineyard designated wines: Rhone varieties from select Madera County vineyards, Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir and Clarksburg Tempranillo, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc. Our wines are produced in small lots. We use sustainably grown grapes and make the wine gently, using native yeasts, gravity flow and other traditional methods. We offer lunch Thursday thru Monday and Sunday brunch. We are located at the Queen's Inn By The River, our quaint 8-room inn and wine bar on the Fresno River.

Unexpected delightful visit
Jan 2021
We found Idle Hour on our search for a place to meet with family at a half way point in CA since some were driving from Bakersfield and the other from Sacramento. It ended up being a perfect day and we were pleasantly delighted in our visit to Idle Hour Winery and Kitchen.

They just opened after being closed for some time and added a marketplace to purchase their wines as well as some delicious spiced honey. We had lunch outside on a platform placed directly in the sun to keep us warm. We order the tasting as well as the cheese platter with fruit and meat. That was when we had a taste of their honey. Yum. The salad they made was with crispy artichoke hearts on a bean puree. So delicious.

As each wine was brought out we received an overview of the wine we were tasting. The labels are beautiful and interesting story behind them. They had a small menu but I have to say that what they served was worth the trip.

Casual 1-hour visit
Aug 2019
My husband and I were exploring the area. We visited this winery based on location and the time we had available. It's a casual tasting room that's tucked away on a side road. The wine tasting fee is $5 per person. They only had red wines available at the time for us to taste. The wines were interesting and embraced the local flare.

Note: There is no food available to purchase.

Great Hidden Gem

Stopped by for a tasting and wasn’t sure what we’d find. What we found was a small winery, buying her grapes mostly from Sacramento area (Clarksburg). She does single varietal reds and lets the grapes natural flavors shine. All her wines were excellent. Our tasting host was the winemaker. She explained her take on each wine and her method of winemaking. We walked away with a half case and every intention of returning!

At last a down to earth wine tasting experience.

The wine tasting at Idle Hour is done right there among the barrel and boxes with no snobbery. This owner/winemaker takes pride in making wine in a traditional way; I learned a lot.

Our wine tasting was done by a really informed guy who obviously loves his job. Interesting wines, some unusual. A little off the beaten track.

Worth the experiment

We had some time to kill, and love wine tasting, so we dropped in mid week to Idle Hour. We were greeted by the manager, who proceeded to offer a very inexpensive tasting. Don't expect Napa, just be open minded to new experiences. We found one we really liked enough to travel home with a few bottles, and the offer a decent discount for a 6 bottle purchase. If nothing else, the manager is well educated, and we learned a thing or two they never talk about in "big" wine country.

Loved it!

I LOVED this winery! The man was so knowledgeable and kind! He answered all of our questions, no matter how ridiculous. The wine was also very good! And $5 per person is impossible to beat. If you have an afternoon off from Yosemite, GO HERE. Even if you don’t have an afternoon off, I suggest going here.

Also, I’ll come again just to see Lulu!!

Is it really a winery
Mar 2018
I do have to admit we only drove by because it is tucked away down a tiny street and has no parking. We have been to NAPA and so maybe our expectations are too high. Looked like a dump from the outside so we did not want to go in.

It’s too bad you did not take the time to come in. In Napa, maybe you see large fancy wineries, but there are also many smaller, family run wineries up there too. I have been making my wines in Oakhurst, with grapes sourced from all over California, for the last ten years. We are not fancy, although I must say, that our property, on 5 acres on the Fresno River, is a scenic and beautiful mountain property. If you drove in yesterday, you probably saw equipment and my forklift out near the winery. We were inside bottling and since we are small, we have to put the equipment outside to have the room to do so. You could have stopped and met a winemaker doing her craft, and I would have been happy to explain the process to you. Probably something you would not see in Napa. Do not discount small wineries, the vast majority of wineries, dare I say, 85% of the 10,000 + bonded wineries in the US are under 10,000 cases, most are under 5,000, and the other 15% are the big fancy wineries making the grocery store wines. We have a functional, not fancy, winery, making small, single-vineyard designated wines from Monterey County, Clarksburg and Madera County. I hope next time you are in the area, you will stop and taste my wines. It’s only $5 for a tasting, and I guarantee you won’t find that tasting price so cheap in Napa.
