A fabulous community benefit for the 18 years the Newport Sports Museum was open, for health and family reasons founder John Hamilton made a difficult decision early in 2014 to close the museum. John had assembled an amazing and diverse collection of over 10,000 sports memorabilia items. John began collecting at age 12, and many pieces were donated by his many friends in the world of sports. Most of the collection was sold at auction in 2014. John kept a few of his favorites.
Many thousands of at-risk and disadvantaged Southern California youth had the opportunity to tour the museum (always free of charge for everyone) to view the collection and to hear from sports stars how they had overcome difficulties in their lives to reach the pinnacle of their profession.
The Newport Sports Museum will be missed, but kudos to John for a job well done.

This was a wonderful museum of all kinds of sports memorabilia but it has closed and we do not know where to advise you to go. We need to know where it is now

Fantastic museum! Unbelievably extensive collection of sports memorabilia. Enjoyable for even those who don't know too much about sports (myself included!).

I tried to visit this museum in June 2014. A sign on the door said the museum is permanently closed.

Some may love it, but seems like an overrated personal colleciton of sports gear from long past athletes.

My children have spent hours enjoying the Newport Sports Museum. The amount of sports memorabilia is amazing, especially for a 12 year old boy. The Newport Sports Museum treasure hunt was not only fun but it was truly educational. Admission is free which was a bonus. I would strongly recommend the Newport Sports Museum.

We visited on 6/20 and really enjoyed seeing lots of interesting sports memorabilia. You can see Shaq's size 22 basketball shoe, Joe Montana's signed football and jersey, and lots of Olympic medals. They have the old and new covered, as well as nearly every sport. An interesting time and it was all free! After that, we walked across the street to a huge mall.

Some cool sports memorabilia at the Newport Sports Museum, but it feels more like a great personal collection than an actual "museum" and visitors can see everything with a short stop.

Collected over a lifetime, this fantastic sports collection is well worth the visit. I was surprised how many wonderful items the owner collected and feel grateful that this is made open to the public. Take your time wondering around this gem of a space.

A treasure of Newport Beach. Many children and adults enjoyed visiting and learning about their favorite sports figure or team. Many famous athletes spoke to children from the Sports Museum. It was a loss to our community when it closed. It wall be missed.
