The memorial statue's location at the entry to Newport Pier is a busy pedestrian, so it's hard to miss. It's also notable that the lifeguard headquarters building, renamed after Carlson, is right there.

Ben Carlson's death was widely noted in the surfing and lifeguarding communities nationwide when it happened. Newport Beach is that famous a beach town. The statue, very much a community project, was created by a Newport Beach artist and fabricated in southern California (stainless steel). It's a respectful and appropriate memorial. When I visited, for the first time, the city's huge Junior Lifeguard program was in full swing at the beach, with lots of groups of kids and clusters of their orange backpacks.

The statue's swim fins, while not brand-specific, lean toward Vipers. Fins designed mainly for bodysurfers, bodyboarders, and ocean lifeguards are niche items, and I suspect that Newport Beach might be the best place anywhere to buy them in person.

The plaza area at the Newport Pier has something for everyone. Cool historical facts on Newport Beach + great places to eat + rental shops for bikes and beach toys.

This is a very fitting and moving memorial of a young man who was in his prime. He courageously lost his life whilst saving a life. It is a fine piece of sculpture, that stands in an appropriate place in the town for all to see.
The whole of his family must be immensely proud of their boy.
If you go to the beach you must visit this memorial to remind you of the risks to yourself and others of getting out of your depth in the sea.

I was in Newport Beach 7 years ago. When I came here this year I saw this statue and didn't remember it being here last time. At first I just thought it was a beach statue. Then I read the plaques. So sad that he died making a rescue. A lovely tribute and they also have the lifeguard headquarters building named after him.

This grand surfer statue got our attention as we relaxed near the Newport pier. It is a tribute to a lifeguard who died saving someone. I remembered swimming around the pier while in college (about 1958). Lifeguards boated out to me to make certain I was OK. I was fine, but they said I should not swim around the pier. The statue is a tribute to all the lifeguards who are on duty to help people.

It feels sympathetic to show reverence for a profession that means so much to California's beach life.

As we spent time enjoying the beach and all that Newport has to offer, this monument in memory and honor to a fallen hero in Ben Carlson, was a sobering reminder of the risk that all first responders undertake to keep us safe. It also reminds us to always be aware of our own safety especially when being in unfamiliar waters.

Lovely tribute to a fallen lifeguard. At the newport beach right next to the pier. It is just a statue but neat to visit if you are at the beach
