Set at a point in the Napa Valley looking straight down to the San Pablo Bay, Bouchaine cellars is one of the larger, yet no less "boutique" vineyards. Our tour group was ushered out into the garden, to a long wooden table under large parasols, with glasses of rosé(their "vin gris") waiting to welcome us. Our tasting guide encouraged us to discover the wines a little differently, attempting to follow our tastes with her proposed wines, continuing our flight in several different directions, depending on the palette. I enjoyed this concept, and applaud the somellier at her capacity to keep track of everyone's preferences. You could tell she knew her stuff, and that Bouchaine(part of the Carneros family) had a large offering of wines for us. I proceeded through two Chardonnays, one oaked and one not, to a Pinot Gris that no one else wanted, though I was eventually brought back to another couple of Pinots Noirs before finishing up with a Late Harvest Chardonnay. The variety was staggering. I love the the beauty of the location, the gardens surrounded by flowers, lavender and greenery, and feeling completely isolated from the outside world - I would have loved to spend the rest of the day in the garden sipping wine, but sadly, I had to keep up with the rest of the tour group.

I hadn't visited Bouchaine since my kids were very little. Several families used to come here for picnics, and to enjoy the scenery and fine wines. The scenery still treats the eye to a magnificent panoramic view of the Carneros region, the East Bay Hills, and on a clear day Mt. Diablo. The old rustic farmhouse still hosts tastings, along with a revamped garden area now outfitted with comfy couches and picnic tables. A brand hew glass dominated tasting room sits on a rise to the right of the old farmhouse. It also affords the great views which accompany a library of chardonnays and pinot noirs, their specialty. Servers are very friends, efficient. and knowledgeable. Like most Napa wineries these days, the wines are on the expensive side, That's relative, of course. Bouchaine delivers value and quality for your money.

My two girlfriends and I had an absolutely lovely visit to Bouchaine. Excellent wine, great staff, beautiful grounds. Our wine educator was Marty, and he was fantastic. Didn't rush us through the tasting, really took care in explaining each wine, and took the time to get to know us. We sat outside on the patio for much of our wine tasting, and then moved to the garden area for a light picnic lunch. It was a gorgeous setting and we didn't want to leave. We did manage to leave with a full case of wine!

Bouchaine is the farthest south winery in Napa Valley. It specializes in excellent Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. The tasting room includes a broad outdoor area and we had a member of the staff work with us the entire time pouring and explaining the many wines, including several off the menu. A new tasting room with an amazing view is under construction and will open later in the year.
