Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Visited with husband, grown son and his girlfriend. All of us enjoyed the organic gardens and fishpond and the museum full of modern art. The gravity system is visible. I enjoy the Hess wines, so it's always a treat to come here. The tour guides are young(er) :--) and enthusiastic about the place, and the folks who are pouring clearly... More

Nice place up in the mountains. The garden is beautiful. Due to earthquake damage, the tasting was on the 3rd floor of the art gallery... I'm sure the tasting room would be better. I don't remember names (sorry), but the guy basically handed us the sheet of wines and asked was we wanted... Definitely different from all other places we... More

Thanks very much for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback. I'm sorry that one of our hosts may have been having an off moment, and we'll use your comments to share with the staff the impressions that can be made, even when they are unintended. We expect to finish the first phase of our earthquake repairs sometime in... More

Great winery and art collection. Check it out, but take some time to sip and stroll, you'll want to spend an hour or two here.

Beautiful spot , six miles west of highway 29 in Napa. Excellent art collection accompanied by good wines and a friendly staff. This winery is one that escapes the hustle of the highway and the road (Redwood) wanders through a residential area and then becomes woodsy before reaching the winery. It's NO RUSH location that offers some of the best... More

We lloved our visit here once you get past the long challenging drive through the hills to this remote venue. Great grounds and an extensive and amazing art collection in various mediums.

The art collection is broad, interesting and good. The setting is nice, particularly on a hot day as it is shaded. The drive to the winery is pleasant. A good selection of wines.

Quaint winery up on the hilltop above Napa the town. Joined the complimentary tour of the property to gain more details on the history and the focus of this winery. Really great art gallery. Wine itself is average, though.

Wine and Art is a great combination to spend some time enjoying an afternoon. From the outside, one would never know of the Art collection awaiting you on the inside. We did have to drive up to this but worth it

If you like art this is an amazing place and if you like great wines you have to go to Hess. The place is a little bit of the beaten tracks but clearly worth the detour.
