Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Tucked away in the mountainside west of Napa, this vineyard is something out of a fairytale at the dead end of a gorgeous road. Museum is cool. Wine is amazing. People are extremely friendly; tours are reasonably priced; no one is pushy. Loved it!

This was our first stop, and what a way to start! The grounds are gorgeous, and everyone is very friendly. Our "wine guide" was a teacher (like two of us) and was very knowledgeable about the wines and the area. We very much enjoyed chatting with her! The art collection is very modern and a bit outside of my taste... More

I'm so pleased we made the trip to this lovely winery. The building is beautiful particularly on the inside and the modern art collection gave a destination feel to the trip. The wine tasting too couldn't be faulted as our guide was charming and very knowledgeable. A great visit - not one to be missed

Six of us visited Hess Collection Winery and Art Collection first thing in the morning (10am) on a Saturday for a 60th birthday. This was one of the highlights of our trip. It just so happened that when we arrived, they were offering a free tour of the property at 10:30am. We were able to take this free tour, learn... More

Beautiful winery with amazing and extensive art collection. I tasted the "Lion" red wine and the citrus moscato, which were both excellent. The art collection is a definite must-see if you are in Napa.

Tasting expensive but Art Museum made it more valuable. The Pinot Noir was my favorite. The grounds and view were wonderful.

Hess is a little bit off the beaten path, but well worth the visit. The wine is delicious and the setting is even better. Also, as an added bonus they have an art museum.

Beautiful place, with a very interesting and eclectic art collection. The staff is excellent, very helpful and friendly. It probably helped that we were the only people tasting at the time (mid-week in December). I thought the tasting price was a little bit high, but they did deduct one tasting from our purchase. Very good wine with lots of options... More
