Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

We had tastes of several delicious wines as we were ably guided on our flight by John W. John was a big reason why we joined the wine club. Great quality in a classy setting. Afterwards we visited the 3 floors of world class artworks. This is not to be missed. The grounds were beautiful and had plenty of room... More

We actually come here coz we've been told that it's a nice place to see if your an artist because they have a Modern Art.. I would say some of it I didn't like just like that mud art in the wall and floors, i love the huge art in the middle of it. The outside area is comforting with... More

Booked the Tour and tastings ($170 for two) in advance and had a great time. Jan was our host who took us on the tour of the art museum. Extremely different and interesting artwork. Very nice display and learning about the artists and the mediums used made it come to life for us. Afterwards we were treated to three wines... More

Learned so much from our guide. She is a long time employee of this establishment and her commitment to them radiates in all the information that she shared. Extensive knowledge and answered every question raised. A curvy, winding road makes it just a little more than a quick stop, but it is certainly worth it. Only wish we could have... More

The tour and wine was pretty good. Not our favorite, but pretty good. Caesar did a great job educating us on the tour. We ran out of time and didn't get to experience the art. Overall a good 4 star experience.

I enjoyed their art exhibition a lot. Modern, sophisticated, and thoughtful. Enjoyed their wines as well. And the wine talk with the wonderful lady who served us the tastings. The tasting room though was small with no other places to sit and chat other than the standing counter.

The winery was off the beaten path, uphill deep into the mountains. Tour are only given at 10:30 and we missed it. Did the Wine Tasting and Art tour. It was good but nothing special.

Art collection well worth the time and drive, beautiful country side, top down and windows open. Signed up (online) for the wine & cheese tasting,"courtyard pairing", sat outside in the comfy couch. Brought our 20 something children and they enjoyed themselves too.

This is a must see in Napa. The Hess collection is an outstanding modern art offering. The gallery on several floors contains a wonderful assortment of classic modern art. The art is beautifully displayed. Our docent Broderick was extremely knowledgeable. Our group had a private luncheon and wine tasting which was a highlight of our visit to Napa. The wines... More
