Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

We made the drive up to the Hess Collection on a Saturday morning. We arrived about 10:15 a.m. and there were already a number of visitors at the Winery. We were very lucky in that a free tour of the grounds was offered at 10:30 a.m. which we took the tour. We learned about the link to Brother Timothy and... More

We went during the second week of July. Nice little place, the scenery was beautiful and the grounds serene. The contemporary art exhibit was over the heads of our kids, but there were still a couple of pieces that they found interesting.

We reserved an 11:30 Tour, Wine & Cheese Pairing at the Hess Collection Winery on August 8. Because of the road construction and traffic in St. Helena, we realized we were going to be about 15 minutes late. I called the Hess Winery and they said it was not a problem. They encouraged us to relax and drive safely. When... More

We went after a concierge suggestion / Trip Advisor reviews, given the wine/art experience. We enjoyed the unique collection more than the wine tasting. It was our first tasting and we joined the club (waives tasting fee - we did a standard and a Select), but after having visited and purchased from other wineries, we wouldn't do so again. Pours... I loved that this was in a more remote place and up on a hill! The place is gorgeous and I loved that it had an art museum. No cost. The tastings were pretty decent priced and they can be shared which is pretty typical in Napa. I would recommend this to everyone!

We had two days in Napa and rather than run from winery to winery, we wanted to see one or two without rushing. Hess offers this vine to table experience, which includes a tour of the vineyard, a look at the Hess art collection, and then a gourmet 3 course lunch with wine(s) that go with each course. It wasn't... More

We where very lucky to walk in for a tasting but really advise you make a reservation. If you don't make a reservation and have to wait, it's still a beautiful experience because they have a museum of art you can enjoy while you wait. Once in the tasting room, the knowledgable staff will explain everything from the process to... More

We liked the buildings, the garden, the art very much. We visited Hess on a Sunday at around 11.30 and it wasn't crowded at all which we highly appreciated. All was nice and calm. We weren't so impressed by the white wines. Sorry!
