About
It might seem cliché to say that the Napa Valley Wine Train is more than the sum of its parts, but it is. Part distinctive Napa Valley fine dining restaurant. Part museum, it’s made up of exquisitely and faithfully restored vintage early 20th-century Pullman cars. Part journey, to some of California’s most celebrated wineries. With its Honduran mahogany paneling, brass accents, etched glass partitions, and plush armchairs, the Wine Train also evokes the elegant glory days of luxury train travel of the early 1900s. You get to sit back, relax, and savor every delicious bite, every bit of extraordinary scenery, every taste and tour. There are lots of ways to explore Napa Valley. This one is an experience you will never forget. With an array of enticing (and delicious) adventures, there is always something new to try on the Napa Valley Wine Train.

We did the 6 hour Legacy Food & Wine trip. The food was tasty and served in courses between stops. The two stops at the wineries were private just for our wine train group which made it efficient time wise. The staff on the train will make you feel like long lost family they are delighted to see. Thank you J and Jorhe(sp?)!! It can be a little pricy but it is a 6 hour day with nice food, a ton of wine, lovely views and even dancing! The pricing is dynamic so poke around a bit if you have some flexibility in your itinerary, some days are less expensive than others for the same trip.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised! We went on the train on our anniversary trip to Napa and chose the lunch option. The weather was lovely, as was the vintage train. Our server Hannah and the other servers did a phenomenal job of making us feel special. I mentioned that I was dairy and gluten free and she worked with me to choose items that could be easily customized. We had purchased a bottle of Zinfandel at the train shop, which was easily the best option considering the $30 corking fee for wines brought in from anywhere else; it was $20 if bought there. There wasn't a corking fee for wines bought on board, but it was still less expensive (with lots more choices) to choose from the shop.

The food was quite good, and the views through various vineyards were pretty cool. After the main meal as we reached the turnaround place we were moved to a lounge car for dessert, which was a more comfortable seating area. Drinks were available on board, and coffee and tea were offered during dessert service. The coconut, guava lime and strawberry sorbets were superb!

I’ve never done a dinner train before but it’s always been on my bucket list of things to do. So for my 40th birthday I decided to take a leap and go on a special dinner train with my husband. They blew my expectations out of the water. Staff was amazing and made me feel very special throughout the experience. The food was fabulous and the experience overall was wonderful. We spent the extra money to be able to be seated in the dome car of the train, and that made the experience even more special. I would highly recommend seating in the Dome to anyone who is interested in going on a dinner train. You won’t be disappointed.

If you like to overpay and have an underperformed experience that the Napa Valley Wine Train is for you! Firstly, when we sat down, I had to asked them to replaced our plates as they were visibly dirt with leftover food. I'm addition, the seats are pre-selected by the train station. Though we were celebrating an special occasions, they did not care and gave us the seats facing the freeway which others got the scenic view. The attend would come around and give you historic background on the mountains and other landscape. We had to eavesdrop on serves to learn the historic importance. Let's talk talk about the "gourmet meal" they so lavishly promote. They give you 2 choices for appetizer: should or salad. Go with the soup. It's rich in taste and filling. Salad was bland and unappetizing. I barely ate my entree. The food was edible and underperforming at every level ranging from presentation to taste. Moreover, when you book the tickets, they will ask you if you are celebrating any special occasions. I brought my girlfriend on her birthday. They are the station and inside the train they asked us who's birthday we were celebrating and then absolutely didn't do anything special for us which others who were celebrating special occasions received their dessert with candles while we waited patiently for ours to arrive so she can blow the candle and make it a memorable day. But no folks. They did no such thing for us. Furthermore, the Gigrich Hills estate was quick tour in which the tour was rushed and we didn't get to enjoy our wine. The tour host was quite knowledge and interactive. You can book the estate tour on your own for $60/person and won't feel rushed out of there. Moreover, I would not recommend on buying any souvenirs as you can buy the exactly same magnets somewhere else without the 40% markup. The wine at the station was drinkable. Nonetheless, when the train was heading back, we got to walk between one compartment to the next. We stood next to the open window to enjoy the wind and scenic view, including the freeway/road view. While we were finally enjoying something, the serve made the point to find us and give us an empty bill with the recommended tip. This guy didn't smile one bit on the whole journey and quiet frankly he didn't enjoy his job. Of course we have the recommended tip. Lastly, back at the station, we had to pay extra for the pictures they took at the beginning of the train tour. I paid $900 for this and they didn't include the photos.

We did the Vista Dome experience. The train itself is nice, and the views are great. The staff was friendly. However, the food was underwhelming (the steaks were WAY over cooked), and the cocktail we ordered was nearly undrinkable. Prior to boarding, we were provided a drink menu so that we would know what is offered on the train. Once we boarded, though, the offerings were different, and the wine I intended to order was not available. If the cost of the experience was half of what we paid, I would have felt much better about the value of the experience. As it is, I would recommend just going to a high end restaurant and then taking a leisurely drive along the same route rather than doing the Vista Dome experience.

The wine was not the highlight. I prefer sweet reds. Aside from a sample of dessert port, nothing on the menu came close. The complimentary pre pour was white & dry. Just to be open to another flavor, I took only a sip or two. I ended up paying an extra $20 for a glass of red. Although smooth & more tolerable, also dry, completely void of even a hint of sweetness. Both options went mostly to waste. For the expense I would have appreciated a courtesy selection more appealing to my palate. The food was tasty enough. The salad was delish. Although very tender, the short rib needed more seasoning or a dipping sauce to give better flavor. The waiters were extremely friendly & accommodating. They were very knowledgeable about the history of all the vineyards along the tour. The decor was lux & comfortable. Although in a tight space, the booths were separate enough for social distancing & gave a measure of privacy. The rate jumped from $195 to $371 closer to the week of my intended stay. When planning trips with coinciding excursions, the weather has to be taken into consideration. Forecast can only be given 10 days out. No one wants to feel like they're getting hustled. If space runs out then so be it, but the price should be fixed not based on availability. All the spots weren't even filled, & I was charged almost double than anticipated (even after a $10 AAA discount). The photo offered at the beginning was likely not free of charge. A single print to capture the memory should be included instead of an add-on. Worth giving a try if the price remained reasonable, did not fluctuate, & the package was more inclusive.

My wife and I was celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and decided to experience the wine train. We decided to take the 3 hour lunch train ride and we were truly disappointed. When we onboarded the train, our ears were pierced with music from the great Michael Jackson. Now we love Michael Jackson, but not for the entire train experience and believed that smooth jazz would have been a better musical playlist. The wine train experience was expensed at approximately, $950 and believe it should have been valued entirely lower. The food was mediocre, the drinks were horrible. I ordered a simple old fashioned. When it was brought to the table, I immediately knew it was not going to be tasteful due to the color of the cocktail and yes, it was horrible. When I requested them to remake the old fashion, even the waitress knew it did not look appealing.

The views on the wine train was not scenic. Your iconic views were greeted with several graffitied images, and an expressway. After returning to the destined vineyard, several individuals was disappointed due to their food not being boxed and placed into the garbage. Our perspective on having a much better experience and less expensive opportunity would have been to drive or personally commute to a winery of choice and eat and drink.

After traveling and experiencing several wineries, wine tasting and wine tours abroad, this was our worst experience for the price. My wife and I have experience wine tours, tasting and food at other wineries entirely better and at the total cost of one person for this wine tour. With Napa being known as a tasteful place for good wine, the wine train experience left a distasteful experience to our pallet.

We have taken other train excursions that we enjoyed much more and were a far better value.
We are average sized adults and each dining booth is very, very tight. The route to the winery is a slow ride on the side of the highway, flat and not particularly scenic or picturesque.
The staff is trying to both serve and narrate, which makes a for a less than smooth delivery. The meal was good. The portions were modest.
The Ggrich wine tasting was fine. I feel they were particularly stingy w/ the pours—“here’s your tablespoon!”
Back on the train, and back to the station (and its gift shop that reminded me very much of a certain breakfast chain’s offerings. )
That’s it. Once you pay for the wine drank w/ your meal, and tip your server, that’s it. Three hours. Almost two thousand dollars. Ridiculous. Never again.

I just read another review (from October 15) and echo what was said. The experience was CLEARLY overpriced. To pay over $500 per person for what turned out to be a rather unimpressive 3 hour train ride, with a mediocre lunch, and a single glass of sparking wine, is a bad value proposition. This is the previous review: "What a waste of money. $600 per person and only given a glass of champagne and no glass of wine with our gourmet lunch on this so called “wine train”. that’s right a wine train not including wine for $600 lunch. train ride had mostly view of tractors, parking lots, pipes, and everything that can be seen by car from the road the train parallels. had to pay extra for the wine. i would have preferred they charge $5 more and include one glass of wine".

Good day, We were disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy your time in our care. The Wine Train travels through the beautiful Napa Valley and our goal is to transport our guests back in time on our historic train while serving a delicious meal. We receive many wonderful comments regarding the views and food, so it is concerning to see you we did not meet your expectation. We get all different kinds of travelers on our trains and surprisingly a large group of them do not wish to drink wine. Because of this, we offer packages with and without wine experiences. We hope that you will reconsider choosing one of our packages that is wine-focused, we are sure that you would love it. Sincerely, Christelle Esse Napa Valley Wine Train

The station and train were immaculate. The schedule was well thought out and the food and service personnel were excellent. The wine presentation was good and the music was appropriate for the mostly age 50+ crowd. The Charles Krug winery experience was excellent and felt classy. The facility and presentation was first class and the bathrooms were spotless. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the V Sattui winery experience. It felt cheap and unprofessional and I would recommend major changes or the Wine Train should drop them altogether.
