Getting on the Elkhorn Slough Safari's aluminum pontoon boat at dock B in the Moss Landing harbor is the start of a day long adventure. The boat is like riding on the top of a double decker bus. You are immediately aware of animals all...More

You will see thousands (yes thousands) of animals in their natural environment. Otters, sea lions, pelicans, cormorants, and fur seals galore! Not to mention all the other types of birds in a beautiful setting. The owner/captain Joe, is respectful of the marine animal protection act....More

Very pleasant 1.5 hour boat ride with well informed naturalist to point out and explain behaviors of sea birds and mammals.

I’ve been reading about this tour in guidebooks for years and I finally got a chance to take it on Labor Day Weekend. It definitely lived up to expectations. The company takes you out into the slough from Moss Landing Harbor on a pontoon boat...More

Midway into our family vacation at Pajaro Dunes, we went out onto the slough. Based at Moss Landing, Elkhorn Slough Safari is a great way to view the wildlife in Elkhorn Slough. Since we had 17 people we rented our own boat (reserved weeks ahead...More

Moss Landing Raft of Sea Otters - Elk Horn Slough (10 Replies)
I realize my question pertains to Moss Landing, but I don't think it will get any attention on the Moss Landing section of the forum, so I'm posing it here in hopes that a local can help me out. I have been on the Elkhorn Slough Safari twice and thoroughly enjoyed each time; however, my main interest is sea otters. Each time, I have seen a large raft of sea otters at the beginning of the ride and I'm thinking the raft is right outside of the the docking area. I'm sure anyone that has been...More

Have you considered kayaking on the Elkhorn Slough? When I did their safari last June, there were several kayakers out and they looked like they had very long, lingering looks at any animals they wanted.

Alternative boat tours of Elkhorn Slough? (11 Replies)
The Elkhorn Slough Safari boat is out of service for maintenance on my upcoming visit in September. I've done it twice, but my travel companion hasn't, so we definitely want to boat the Slough. I've looked at Whisper Charters, but the inward-facing seating looks awkward, as in order to see out of the boat (which is the whole point of the excursion), you either have to twist in your seat or look across the boat and past any people sitting across from you. Kayaking is out because she has a bad...More

Those are the only two boats I have ever seen down there. And I think Whisper Charters is relatively new as well. That is too bad about the kayak. She can not even do two hours on the kayak? How about hydrobikes? https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Revie…

Everyone on here always seems so helpful so I am hoping someone can help me figure out the best way to plan our days in Monterey/Carmel to get the most in since I am not familiar with the locations and drive times. We will be there from Friday, June 13th in the afternoon until Wednesday, June 18th early morning. The things I want to book that have specific times are: Beach bonfire - already booked for Friday at 8:00 PM in Carmel Wine trolley tour - can be any day from 11-4 (Unless someone...More

Hi Kelly, If it were me, I'd probably do something like the following: Saturday - food tour in the morning, afternoon to wander around town Sunday - safari in the morning, sailing in the afternoon Monday - wine tour. I'd do this during the week rather than the weekend, since the wineries will be less crowded and you'll get more attention than fighting your way to the tasting bar through a crowd of people Tuesday - drive to Point Lobos and hike around for a while, then on to Bixby...More
