Our group of four rented two double kayaks and paddled Morro bay for 2 hours. Tons of estuary birds (herons, egrets, pelicans) and harbor seals. The sand dunes are stunning to walk across - looks like tatooine in star wars. Staff at a kayak shack were very helpful and rates are reasonable. With any experience/confidence you don't need a guide. I will say you do need to pay attention to the tides so you don't get stuck on a sandbar or have too challenging a paddle against the current.

I really appreciated the ease with which I was able to jump in a kayak quickly. It was kind of foggy on the bay, which I'm guessing is typical for this time of year. We saw a few seals in the channel, lots of pelicans and some delightful curlews (I'm guessing). We were also able to walk up onto the big dunes across the bay.

My daughter and two grandchildren, ages 9 and 12, went kayaking with Ocean Mike, a naturalist, for a fun and informative two hour kayak tour of the bay protected by the sand spit - very calm and unintiimidafting. They visited the oyster farms and saw otters, seals and magnificent white pelicans. The kayaks are easy to board there because of study pipe structures to grab on the slips. Prices are reasonable and it was a fun experience.

We took a 9am kayaking tour through the Kayak Shack, which includes kayaking in Morro Bay State Park and a walk on sand dunes and a beach.
We arrived about 30 minutes early to park and use the restroom, but they don't open the gates until 9am, so we walked around the area for 20 mins.
We were fitted for life jackets and given a granola bar and sunscreen was available, which was nice. We were not instructed how to get back in the kayak in the event of capsizing, which we've received on other tours we've taken.
The tour includes some narration about birds, otters and the 'pirate ship'. I would have liked more narration and less time on the dunes/beach. We did see a few otters and birds. Unfortunately, the day we went, it was so foggy, we were unable to see Morro Rock. :( After kayaking, we were shown some otter pelts and a few other things of interest back at the shack.
My main concern was that the seats in the kayak could have been better -- they seemed like they needed replacing and they weren't adjustable for tension. My husband's back hurt for a week afterwards due to the fact the seats weren't adjustable. (He's over 6') We've taken many kayak tours in different places while on vacation and never encountered seats that were not adjustable and looked worn out like these ones.
I felt slightly underwhelmed by the tour, but it was pleasant and a nice way to spend time on the water.
Note: There are restrooms near the dock and parking area. Make sure you go before you kayak as there are no other opportunities. Free to park. There's a popular restaurant called Bayside Cafe at the Marina that you may want to try after the tour. (When we were there, the wait was too long, we decided not to stay).

Absolutely fantastic experience. Don't be put off by a long line. They cleared the line in 10 minutes.
The staff were ultra-friendly and helpful.
This is definitely one of the best kayak departure points because they have a very convenient overhead bar with handles for entering and exiting the kayak. No rolling on and off the dock.
Prices are extremely reasonable. Kayak is in good condition.
A 2-hour kayak adventure across Morro Bay with a hike across the sand dunes cannot be beat. And if you're going to do it I recommend doing it here.

We began the day just as Kayak Shack opened. After a friendly chat in our masks we geared up for a tandem paddle. Upon our return, I could see gear being carefully sanitized for future kayakers. It was definitely a great way to spend the morning.

This was our first kayak experience and I was nervous to even try. One of my legs doesn’t bend under me and I was afraid I would not be able to get in or out of the kayak. I called ahead of time and the staff member assured me that that was not an unusual situation and it would not be a problem. As he said I was able to get in and out with assistance even though it may not have looked pretty. We rented a two person kayak and the seats were actually very very comfortable. I recommend this group without hesitation.

We had a great time renting kayaks from the Kayak Shack. The two women working there the afternoon of 2/22/20 were so friendly and helpful. They quickly got us launched and happy paddling across the bay to the sand dunes of the peninsula. We then had a blast exploring and walking across the soft sand dunes to the side where the waves break. The scenery is gorgeous everywhere you look. When we got back to the dock the were again very helpful, happy and friendly and made the excursion more enjoyable because of that.

Great place to rent a kayak or standup paddle board, to take across the estuary to the dunes then a nice walk over to the ocean. Great view of Morro Bay from the dunes. An Otter or two along the way make the journey fun. The staff at the Shack was supper helpful and friendly. And a bargain at $48 for 3 hours in a double kayak.

We rented a tandem and a single kayak on Saturday. It was very quick and easy. Staff was very friendly
The equipment was in good condition and there is dock right there for extremely easy loading and unloading from kayak without getting wet!
Price is also less than anybody else in Morro Bay!!
