High Desert Hike In Morongo Valley

2 reviews
This unique location is 30 minutes north of downtown Palm Springs & halfway to Joshua Tree National Park. The Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is an oasis located in the Sand to Snow National Monument in the Mojave desert town of Morongo Valley. The Morongo Valley fault runs through the preserve & you can actually touch it too, but don't worry the fault has not moved in over 20,000 years. Some of the oldest rock formations in North America at approximately 2.7 Billion years old can be seen here. The preserve is also an internationally recognized birding site. On the fringes of the Mojave and Colorado deserts, to high peaks covered by snow more than half the year. Sand to Snow National Monument extends west along the Little San Bernardino Mountains to the western border of Joshua Tree National Park, where elevations are as low as 1,000 feet to the eastern summits of the much higher San Bernardino range & the tallest peak in Southern California being the 11,503 foot San Gorgonio Mountain.

My husband and I took a 2 hour trail ride and it was just wonderful. The animals were extremely responsive and calm. The guide was was knowledgable about the various types of cactus, etc. and animals (mostly jack rabbits) that we saw. Also, before and after the ride there was the most adorable outhouse to use! One of the best horse back riding experiences ever!

Sue led my wife and I and our daughter on an absolutely amazing ride through the canyon on a picture perfect day. Our horses, Gus, April and Sierra were great and made the ride easy for beginner riders. Sue was an amazing guide and filled us in on all the history of the area. Highly recommend Coyote Ridge Stable to anyone who wants a great outdoor adventure.

We've taken many rides but without a doubt, our ride with Sue and her lovely animals was in a class by itself. The landscape was in full flower and we had the canyon to ourselves. The animals were very responsive and fun and the information on the flora and fauna that Sue provided was comprehensive and fascinating. We were able to relax and enjoy ourselves completely. We fully intend to return and ride with Sue again. It was a perfect way to see the Super Bloom, even better than inside the Joshua Tree National Park.
