I’ve always been a fan of Steinbeck’s novels and even took a semester long Steinbeck course at Stanford. His book “Cannery Row” has long been one of my favorites, and some of the colorful characters are represented in this large sculpture. Located in a small plaza just 2 blocks from the Aquarium and near some great restaurants, this seems to be a gathering place for tourists as well as locals. The view of the Bay is stunning, and the reminders of the interesting and colorful history of the area are all around you. You can also access the sandy beach from this cove, where rocks and seaweed are exposed during low tide, and you can roll up your pants and look for sea life along the shore.

For those travelers who have never been to Monterey or Cannery Row, the statue of John Steinbeck serves as a reminder of how important this author, adventurer was to the area. I, personally, am not into statues, but the one of Steinbeck is very appropriately placed. Steinbeck wrote his famous books, Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, Travels With Charley, all from the local area. I am glad the statue is there to memorialize him. But, if a visitor really wants to see Steinbeck's life, then the Steinbeck Museum in Salinas is a must.

Designed by sculptor Steven Whyte, the Cannery Row Monument pays tribute to the many notorious and famous characters associated with Cannery Row. Sitting on top of the rock styled monument is the man himself, John Steinbeck, who is surrounded by eight other bronze figures.
I have visited Monterey on numerous occasions and always enjoy stopping for 5 minutes to take in the monument and the surrounding views. It is a very relaxing place, with places to sit and some nice flora decorating the space around the monument. Well worth a visit if in Monterey.

This is a nice, well done monument in the heart of Monterey's cannery district

This is a great place to stop and visit when you are in town. Reflect on the origins and the history of the area.

In December, they decorate the men with santa hats.

The Cannery Row Monument honours the many famous people who played a vital role in the evolution of Cannery Row. At the top of the rock-shaped monument is John Steinbeck, surrounded by eight other bronze figures - figures reminiscent of the days when Cannery Row was the bustling sardine canning district that exposed it to the lives of the people who filled it with literary inspiration. The four "boys" huddled together on the rock were modeled after four entrepreneurs who adopted the remains of the canning district and devoted themselves to its rebirth.

Nine individuals who had a part to play in Monterey's history and helped shaped the town into what we see today are depicted in this monument. There's John Steinbeck, the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature - he's the one highest on the mound, marine biologist Ed Ricketts, and several characters who worked in and around the canning factories, including some Chinese fishermen. But the best thing about the monument is its location - fronting the Pacific Ocean, the views are lovely.

I loved this monument. As a big fan of Steinbeck's novels it was fun to see the cast of characters he portrays.

An impressive monument, particularly as it includes elements of ‘just people’ - not only the ‘famous’.

A monument on the Bay - a nice place to look out over the Bay while honoring those hard workers who made Cannery Row what it once was - literally a row of canneries where sardines and other fish were canned for sale all over the world. The characters captured in the monument give you a sense of those people characterized by John Steinbeck in his book "Cannery Row".
